A scarce collection of official reports from the Geological Survey of Victoria, largely focused on the gold mining activities and geological characteristics of Victoria’s rich mining landscapes, issued by the Department of Mines between 1876 and 1908. This collection provides a historical record of the development of Victoria’s mining industry and geological survey practices in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.It encompasses Progress Reports, Monthly Progress Reports, Bulletins, and Records of the Geological Survey of Victoria, each report authored by notable geologists and civil engineers of the period, including Robert Brough Smyth, Alfred William Howitt, Reginald Augustus Frederick Murray, and Edward John Dunn. A series of detailed reports, Nos 2-3 under the direction of Australian geologist Robert Brough Smyth (1830-1889), recording the progress of geological surveying of the state of Victoria, by such eminent individuals as the anthropologist, explorer and naturalist Alfred William Howitt (1830 -1908), the geologist, Reginald Augustus Frederick Murray (1846–1925); and civil engineer and geologist Ferdinand Moritz Krause (1841-1918). This remarkable set of Reports includes detailed information on subjects such as the Mitchell River, Stawell goldfield, Ararat goldfield, South-western Gippsland, Devonian Rocks of North Gippsland, Creswick goldfield, Clunes goldfield, Dargo and Bogong, Skipton coal seams, laboratory reports, prospecting operations, etc. The reports are extensively illustrated with sections, folding maps, plans and diagrams. 2) New Series, Monthly Progress Reports, No. 2-12 (May 1899-March 1900), issued by James Travis, the Acting Secretary for Mines.
