A uniformly bound, four volume set of the 1861 census of England, Wales, and Scotland. It was printed and published by Her Majesty's Stationary Office and presented to the Houses of Parliament in 1862. A scarce work. This set comprises of the following:Volume I, Population Tables: Numbers and Distribution of the People. Containing information counties, lieutenancy, sub-divisions, cities, boroughs, towns, as well as information on poor law divisions and poor relief. Volume II, Populations Tables Cont.: Ages, Civil Condition, Occupations, and Birth-Places of the People. Also including ages and occupations of the blind, of the 'deaf-and-dumb', and of the inmates of certain public institutions. Volume III, A General Report: Including general information on persons absent from the United Kingdom, increase in population, males and females, territorial distribution and subdivisions, ages of the population, conjugal condition, public institutions, and more.Volume IV, Scotland: Including tables of the number of the population of the families and children at school of the houses and rooms with windows in Scotland and its islands.This set was previously housed in the Nottingham Public Libraries and has been rebound in library half calf. It contains the usual library stickers and stamps throughout, including to the pastedowns, front free-endpapers, and title pages. Rebound in half calf with cloth covered boards. Externally, some rubbing to the joints, spines, and extremities, particularly to Volumes I, II, and III. General shelf wear to the boards. Library stickers to the front pastedowns, front free-endpapers, title pages, and pages 3 of Volume IV. Library stamps can be found on the verso of the title pages as well as to the odd page throughout the volumes. Internally, front hinges to Volumes I, III and IV are starting, and front hinge to Volume II is slightly tender. Otherwise binding is firm. Pages remain generally bright and clean. Very Good . A very scarce privately printed volume delineating the genealogy of the Shelmerdine family. The Shelmerdine family was first found in Cheshire where they held family seats as Lords of the Manor. This volume is comprised of lists of baptisms, marriages, and burials of the Shelmerdine family in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The list is comprised of six pages, with many empty pages following the text for binding purposes. With an ex-libris sticker to the front pastedown. This volume previously belonged to the Royal Albert Memorial Public Library in Exeter. With a blind stamp from Exeter City Library to the title page. With librarian's ink inscription to the verso of the title page. In a blue cloth library binding. Externally, rather smart. The first edition of this very scarce work in the original cloth binding, with the family crests in gilt to the front board.Ink inscription to the front free end paper. Ink inscriptions to pages 8, 17, 18, 23, 26, and 29, and colour pencil to pages 13 to 29, from a previous owner who has added further information concerning family history. An interesting genealogical work with a folding pedigree. The Branfill family of Upminster Hall were prominent landowners in Upminster for over two hundred years from 1685, with marriages of the women of the family joining the Branfills and Harrisons - a fellow Upminster family - together. In the original cloth binding. Externally sound, with faint marks to the boards and shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, the binding is a little strained, but firmly held by cords. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot and handling mark. Tidemark to the bottom of the title page. Ink inscriptions to pages 8, 17, 18, 23, 26, and 29. Colour pencil to pages 13 to 29. Good .
