From Earliest Times To 1857. In Six Volumes. Vol. VI. Chapters One To Six. ". This is the complete Volume 6 of Sir George Cory's The Rise Of South Africa, 6 chapters of the intended 12, as interrupted by his death. (Later published by Longmans in 1940 in the same format as their preceding volumes. This deals mainly with Sir George Grey's administration including the establishment of the independent republics in the North, and the early history of the Church of England in South Africa.

Printed for the Author by Spottiswoode & Co. London 1882. Gilt title on brown cloth bevelled boards. aeg. 107pp + 62 plates. 330mm x 260mm. 1.7kg. Worn at head and tail of spine, corners worn to board. rear shows some marks, the front is relatively mark-free and accordingly still attractive. Two bookplates (William Coulson Tregarthen) to front pastedown. ffep loose 50%. Second of two contents pages (vix-vx) missing, (first torn by removal of same). Extensive annotations and a tipped-in handwritten note on p.25. Plates 19 & 22 have extensive annotations on the borders. The rear of Plate 62 has two cards pasted thereon, perhaps from another publication, also annotated, showing heraldic devices for Cazminow, Courtenay, Trenowth, Arundell, Godolphin, and Killygrew names. Opposite appears some handwritten family trees, also annotated. On the rear free end paper are pasted three stamped envelope fronts to W. Coulson Tregarthen. On the rear pastedown are tipped four ALS. All 62 plates present. All annotations and additional material present in this copy appear to be related to the early Tregarthen family.

Galpin, George Luck.
The Family of Galpin of Staffordshire & Dorset.
Chiswick Press. London 1926. Gilt on red cloth boards. 100pp illustrated 4to with two folding genealogy charts in rear pocket. Boards insect-scarred. some few annotations. illustrations and charts in good order. a sound copy if unattractive. George Luck Galpin (1857-1941) was the fifth of six sons of Henry Carter Galpin (b. 1820) who came to South Africa in 1848, moving to Grahamstown the next year to set up business as a watchmaker and jeweller. His house, in Bathurst Street, with its camera obscura, is presently a museum. George Luck Galpin was schooled at St Andrews in Grahamstown. He then went to England where he qualified first as a dentist and then as a surgeon. Returning to South Africa he practised as a surgeon (F.R.C.S.) in Port Elizabeth from 1885 to 1912. This work records in detail the early family history in England up to Henry Carter Galpin, and is replete with illustrations, detailed notes, arms. etc.

The original Thomas Melvill arrived in Simon's Bay in May 1901. Much information from various written sources and documents is contained herein as well as a family registers comprising the original prepared in 1921 by J.M. Marquard and a more detailed one prepared by Janet Mellville in 1977.

Joseph Levey was born in Leven in Fifeshire about 1784/1785. With his wife Elizabeth they came to Cape Town on the "Brilliant" in 1817. They travelled with the Moodie Party as independent settlers, moving at some time to Graham's Town. Includes pasted in sheet re Protein S deficiency by Colin Levey which is a genetic trait in the family.
