Gertrud Caspari (22 March 1873 – 7 June 1948) was one of the most important German children's book illustrators in the first half of the 20th century, and is recognised as the creator of a "modern toddler" or "Caspari" style. Funchal, Madeira. nd. c.1890-1900. 232mm wide x 176mm high. Photographer's stamp to rear. Physically VG+ condition, but image fading right top portion - see image. Manuel de Olim Perestrello (1854-1929) was a Portuguese commercial photographer based in Funchal, Madeira, in the late 1800s & early 1900s. This original print is a view looking down onto the harbour and town of Funchal, with vine trellises in the garden to the foreground. 'Madeira' is inscribed in pencil to rear. Little appears recorded on the life of this photographer, but his photographs generally show a keen eye for an interesting viewpoint and have historical significance showing the Madeira of now more than a century ago.
