Baxter, J.D.
The witch of Pendle: a play of Tudor days
Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. London, n.d.[1909].Hard covers, no dust jacket.V.g./ No Jacket .Cover and spine sunned.Printed in Blackburn, Lancashire by J.& J.Toulmin, ""Times"" printing works, Northgate, this rare play should appeal to Spenser enthusiasts. It involves a cast of characters ranging from Queen Elizabeth the First to Edmund Spenser himself. Also appearing are the Witch, Gammer Gray, Dame Dyneley the widow, and of course Rose Dyneley. There is the inevitable astrologer and alchymist, Dr Dee, and the exuberant Tristram Magnificenza, an adventurer and follower of Raleigh. There are some other minor characters, and Moll and Tibb, serving maids, complete the cast. The play opens at Dyneley manor-house, and moves via the corner of the Pleasaunce to the kitchen of the tavern of the Three Fishes in the ""Castled Town"" (Clitheroe, presumably).Passing on to a barber's shop in the same town, the first Act finishes back at the Pleasaunce.Act Two introduces us to the Witch's Turret, and Act Three takes place partly in a Ruined Abbey (Whalley, one assumes). The concluding Act takes place mainly at the Hall in Read with a brief excursion to Merlin Ride. The book is bound in publisher's red buckram with gold lettering on spine and a motif on the front. Some foxing throughout, except for frontispiece, a monochrome photo of a painting of Spenser's Cottage, Burnley by permission of Messrs.Raphael, Tuck & Sons, which is printed on better-quality paper.104 pp.A note on p.[2] facing the first page of the 'Historical Introduction' states that ""Musical setting to Lyrics may be obtained from the composer, Dr Christie Green, Adelaide Terrace, Blackburn"".In English.1 kg.
