London and Glasgow, William Collins, n.d. Small 8vo. original blue cloth lettered black, yellow 'chalk' endpapers, 144 pp. 115 x 170 mm. A fair copy. Cloth and endpapers marked and soiled, spine ends pulled, internally a little soiled from usage and age. However, tight, no tears, no underscoring. Not dated but probably 1882 edition. Margaret Black wrote a number of books on cookery and housekeeping. She founded the West End School of Cookery in 1878 and was active in such causes as temperance and women's suffrage. Light Fare Recipes for Corn Flour and "Raisley" Cookery.
Paisley and London, Brown & Polson, n.d. Original yellow cloth, with blue and white illustrated on-lay to both boards. 110 x 217 mm. 121 pp. 3 b/w plates. With indices and advertising for Raisley cooking utensils. Two Brown & Polson coloured recipe slips, inscribed: "Katie Vaughan, Aberaeron, 1926". Light wear, cloth darkened, corners bruised, lacks front free endpaper but clean internally and tight. No loss no tears or marks. Brown & Polson originally used starch to process muslin. By 1842, John Polson Jnr. had succeeded in producing a powder starch which could be used in cooking - this was to become 'Brown & Polson's patent cornflour'.

Generally good condition with very light signs of wear. Anne Edith (Nancy) Catford Stone, talented sculptor, puppeteer, figurine modeller for Wedgwood, brought up Quaker, worked in Poland, Hungary and G.B. in the Friends Relief Service during WWII. This little handbook was published in answer to the large number of 'war' nurseries which had opened up but lacked suitable, safe and sturdy equipment for small children.

Hugh Anthony Clegg was a British medical doctor and editor of the British Medical Journal from 1947 to 1965. In 1932 he married Kira von Engelhardt, Baroness von Smolensk, daughter of a Russian émigré, Arthur Engelhardt, Baron von Smolensk. Nick Clegg is their grandson.

The artist also published books on lingerie making, dressmaking and knitting. Dust wrapper by C. H. Feeding and Care of Baby. Issued by the Society for the Health of Women & Children.
London, Macmillan and Co. 1917. Early edition of this classic. Boards a little warped and somewhat marked, fore-edges grubby, small tear to one page else complete. A tight copy, no annotations. Used; Good It is the establishment of the Plunket Society in 1907 for which Truby King is best known. Set up to apply scientific principles to nutrition of babies, and strongly rooted in eugenics and patriotism, its 1917 "Save the Babies" Week had the slogan "The Race marches forward on the feet of Little Children". Truby King's methods to teach mothers domestic hygiene and childcare were strongly promoted through his first book on mothercare, "Feeding and Care of Baby" (first published in 1913, reprinted in 1916 and 1917) and via a network of specially trained Karitane Nurses and a widely syndicated newspaper column. Hardback.
