Written by Pierre Philippe Alyon, a French medical botanist and prolific author on scientific subjects. A smart set, bound in contemporary quarter calf bindings. A scarce edition of this work. To the preface, Alyon notes that he first composed this guide to chemistry for the children of the former Duke of Orleans to whom he was responsible for teaching chemistry. His original textbook was written in 1786. To this edition he has made some alterations and has updated certain parts in accordance with the development of science. To the title page it is noted that this work was published in year VII of the French Republican Calendar. The Republican Calendar began in year 1789 of the Gregorian Calendar. Year VII loosely translates to the Gregorian year 1798. In French. With the half-titles to each volume and errata to the rear of volume II. A smartly bound two volume set by this noted French scientist of the eighteenth century. In quarter calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with just some minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Occasional light spots to pages. The second edition of this exceptionally scarce work.Bound in full morocco. Dated using Jisc from copies of the work held at the National Library of Scotland. Written by American physician Edwin Dwight Babbitt, who was known as one of the earliest pioneers in the science of chromotherapy. In 'The Principles of Light and Color', Babbitt's aim was to highlight the medicinal benefits of chromotherapy, using colour and light as part of his treatments. Additionally, the author wanted to present to the world a philosophy of colour and light, which he believed was integral to understanding the principles of life. Wonderfully illustrated with four vibrant coloured plates, one of which is a double page, with more than two hundred additional vignettes throughout the work. Collated, complete. With five pages of reviews to the rear of the work. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. Bound in full morocco. Externally, excellent, with a little rubbing to the joints and a touch of fading to the spine. Translated from the original Latin of Sir Torbern Bergman by Edmund Cullen. Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735 – 1784) was a Swedish chemist and mineralogist noted for his 1775 Dissertation on Elective Attractions, containing the largest chemical affinity tables ever published. Bergman was the first chemist to use the A, B, C, etc. system of notation for chemical species. With five fold-out plates and tables to volume one, including a Synoptical Table, and two fold-out plates to volume two. Collated and Complete. Scarce. Re-bound in quarter-calf bindings.
