. 4to. Pp. (xvi), vi, 312, (38) table. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with five raised bands and red title label, extremities worn, spine ends chipped. Small marginal hole to half title and some very light staining to lower right corner of first thirteen leaves. First edition. Devoted to Muslim law, politics and government in Turkey, Persia and India. The author argues that Montesqieu's view of oriental despotism was wrong. Anquetil-Duperron, French scholar and linguist who travelled to India to search for ancient Zoroastrian texts. He acquired and translated almost 200 such manuscripts.

. Tall 8vo. Pp. (iv), xiii, 278, vi (index). Text written in Perso-Arabic Nastaliq and Russian Cyrillic. Occasionally some small staining, parts of text browned due to the paper quality. Contemporary half cloth on marbled paper boards, spine faded. Library stamps to the title page (Vienna University library). First edition and the first printed work about the Azerbaijani language. Budagov (1812-79), Armenian-born in Astrakhan, studied in Moscow and Kasan and served as professor of Turkish and Persian at the University of St. Petersburg. Very rare. Not in Zaunmüller.

. Pp. xii, 207. With engraved frontispiece, one folding map and 24 photographic illustrations. The photos of the Yarkand country were taken by Captain Deasy. Publisher's decorated cloth, light wear to extremities. A narrative of Church's travels through Turkestan in 1899-90 together with his friend J.V. Phelps. The aim of the journey was to try and shoot the Altai Wapiti, the great stag of the Tian Shan, ibex and roe deer. The route taken included Leh, Yarkand, Aksu, Shatta, Kuldja, and Khotan. . Pp. 144. With six maps (two in the text), two coloured plates, five half-tone plates and many textual illustrations. Errata slip enclosed. Original red cloth, faded at spine ends. Original red dust jacket lettered in white, chipped along edges, small loss to spine ends. First edition of an important book on the local flora. Violet Dickson first came to the Middle East in 1920 as the wife of British colonial administrator Harold Dickson. Before settling in Kuwait, she and her husband lived in Bahrain, Iran and Iraq. In 1929 they moved to Kuwait where Violet remained for 61 years and acquired the honorific titles Umm Kuwait (Mother of Kuwait) and Umm Saud (Mother of Saud). She was a keen botanist and had a desert plant, Horwoodia dicksoniae, named in her honour. She regularly sent wildflowers to Kew Gardens in London, and mammal specimens to the British Museum.
