Amsterdam: Joanis a Someren / Hernrici & Viduae Theodori Boom, 1681. First Edition. Vellum spine on marbled boards. 290mm x 240mm (11" x 9"). [3pp], 496pp. Engraved frontis plate and sixty-five fine engraved anatomical plates. Gerard Blasius (1627-1682) - Dutch physician and anatomist. He was the eldest son of Leonard Blasius, who had worked as an architect in Copenhagen. Gerard started his studies there then moved to Leiden with his family, after his father died. Around 1655 he became a physician in Amsterdam. In October 1659 Blasius was appointed at the Athenaeum Illustre but without being paid. In the next year he became the first Amsterdam professor in medicine. This, his last work is considered the first comprehensive treatise on comparative anatomy.. G : in good condition without dust jacket. Boards rubbed with edge-wear. Vellum spine age-darkened. Edge-tear to fep with some loss. Closed tear to upper edge of frontis engraving (c. 1"). Previous owner's ink inscription to fep. Contents otherwise clean and tight .

The bookplate of the Earl of Galloway is the verso of the title page.. G: in good condition. Covers soiled. Some soiling to the fore-edge of the title page as well as some other light marks and blind-stamp. The plates are in very good condition .

The pagination is faulted, jumping from pages 107 to 183 - though the book is complete. William Leybourn was a printer before working as a land and quantity surveyor. He was one of the surveyors of London after the great fire of 1666 where he was associated with Robert Hooke. His book was one of the standard treatises on surveying throughout the second half of the 17th. and beginning of the 18th. century.. G: in good condition. Originally published as 'Artis Magnae Artilleriae' in Amsterdam in 1650 the work contains one of the first tracts on the rocket as well as treating the subjects of pyrotechnics and weights and measures.
