Taylor, Herbert (1775-1839). British Army officer who served as Private Secretary to King George III, Queen Charlotte, and King William IV, and served as Aide de Camp to King George IV and also to Queen Victoria.
A 2-1/2 Page Autograph Letter Signed by Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Taylor Formerly Aide de Camp to the Duke of York, with Personal Content Regarding His Brother's Accident.
February 6, 1829. 1829. - Quarto, 9-1/8 inches high by 7-1/4 inches wide. Two-and-a-half pages. Over 180 words penned on 3 sides of a folded sheet. Herbert Taylor thanks the recipient who is caring for his brother for his letter regarding his concerns. "I cannot sufficiently thank you for your friendly & considered attention in writing to me on the 30th Jany upon the subject of the accident which unfortunately happened to my dear Brother on the 27th..". He goes on to state "I thank God that he has escaped more serious injury.. It is most satisfying to know that he is in such good hands and that he has with him so kind and attentive a friend as yourself." Signed "H. Tayor". Folded for mailing, the letter is mounted to stiff paper stock with glue along the edge of the blank verso of the last leaf. Very good.

The British Army officer, Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Taylor (1775-1839) rose through the ranks after jointing the 2nd Dragoon Guards. He served as Aide de camp to the Duke of York, then commander-in-chief of the British Army and as Aide de Camp, Military Secretary and Private Secretary to the Marquess Cornwallis. In 1805, he became Private Secretary to the Sovereign, in service to King George III. He was the first person to fill this post. From 1811, he served as private secretary to Queen Charlotte. Returning to the field to command a brigade at Antwerp in 1813-14, he then served as Member of Parliament for Windsor from 1820-23, and Ambassador to Berlin from 1820 to 1827. He was first and principal Aide de Camp to King George IV and deputy Secretary at War. Adjutant-General to the Forces from 1828-30, he became private secretary to the new king William IV and served as first and principal Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria from 1837-39. He was Master of St. Katherine's Hospital and appointed Master Surveyor and Surveyor-General of the Ordnance in 1828.

26 August 1844 4 pp. 16mo. On a folded sheet of stationery with printed decoration. Frogmore, 26 August 1844. Thanks her grandson Eduard for his letter and good wishes to her birthday. Talks about other family members, a.o. "Deine Tante Victoria und der Onkel Albert befinden sich recht und lassen Dich grüssen ..". Victoria, princess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, became princess of Leiningen by her first marriage, of which issued two sons, Charles and Feodore. In 1818, she married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and in 1819, princess Alexandrina Victoria (later Queen Victoria) was born. The present addressee must be the child of one of her sons. AUTOGRAPHS ;
