Brown, Hattie (pseudonym of W.D. Linton); W.J. Linton, ed.
Catoninetales: A Domestic Epic
London, Lawrence and Bullen, 1891. Special Limited Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. One of the cuter feline caper-books you'll ever see, illustrated and edited by W.J. (William James) Linton, "Hattie Brown," "a young lady of colour lately deceased at the age of 14," and published in First Limited Edition of 330 copies, this being #228, and published by Lawrence and Bullen of London, 1891. Buckram cloth-bound octavo format, moderately worn, mildly soiled, but heavily sunned to edges, and especially tanned at spine. Previous owner's gift inscription at first free endpaper. 100 pp. Cat-focused heroic verse, and perhaps with nods to other authors akin to Joel Chandler Harris and Don Marquis, Catoninetales was originally published in pamphlet form in the U.K. as a broadside against racism undergirding the American Reconstruction. Gloriously funny footnotes, and illustrations titled such as "Ye Mewsis!" Beginning separation of hand-sewn text-block from upper portion of spine, and light, almost imperceptible splitting to front joint at top, else still quite sturdy and attractive. Protected in stiff mylar.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Good
