Ireland IR, 1854. Non-Book. On offer is an Autographed Signed Letter (ASL) of William Henry Ford Cogan (1823-1894). Dated 93 Stepheny Green, London, 17 Jan[uray] 1854 with a small blind embossed Crogan coat of arms [constans fidei (constant to honour) ] letterhead. Accepting an invitation to sit on the Wine Duties Reduction Committee. 6 x 7-1/2 inches flat folded to 6 x 3-3/4 inches. Autograph letter signed. One page. Old glue, tape reside and 1-1/4 x 1/2 inches paper missing from back panel but tear not affecting and hand writing on back, otherwise very good condition. William Henry Ford Cogan was an Irish Whig (and later Liberal) politician. He was a fellow commoner of Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated A. M, obtained honours in science, and gained the large gold medal at the degree examination ; was first senior moderator in meta- physics and ethics 1843; called to the bar in Ireland 1845, but has relinquished practice ; a D. L. Of co. Kildare, and a magistrate for Wick- low, Kildare, and Carlow. Cogan was Member of Parliament (MP) for Kildare from 1852 to 1880, representing the county in the United Kingdom House of Commons.; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author. London, T Cadell and W Davies, 1817. Leather. A scarce first edition copy of Thomas Cogan's treatise, which sought to trace the moral history of man in his pursuits, power and motives of action. With a prize bookplate to the front pastedown from Glasgow university addressed to one Joannes Thompson for their work in ethics class. In this work Cogan answers seven questions he poses. Each question is a separate chapter. Examples include 'What are the sources of rational conviction? and what are the characteristic differences of each?' and 'Is benevolence a principle distinct from Self-love, or a modification of it?&apos. This was Cogan's final publication before his death. A very smart copy of this scarce philosophical study. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. A few light spots to the boards. Light rubbing to the joints. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright.
