Captain Wedgwood Benn
Safeguarding Whom? the Profiteer, or the Worker: Labour&Apos;S Answer to the Protectionists
London, The Labour Party, 1929. First edition. Paperback. A scarce political pamphlet, rejecting the Conservative Party's Tariff Reform, by the Labour M.P. Captain Wedgwood Benn. The first edition of this scarce work in the publisher's original paper wraps. William Wedgwood Benn, 1st Viscount Stansgate (1877-1960) was a British Liberal politician who later joined the Labour Party. A decorated Royal Air Force officer, he was Secretary of State for India between 1929-31 and Secretary of State for Air between 1945-6. In this pamphlet, he argues that the term 'Safeguarding', used by the Conservative Party to support their Tariff Reform, is the same as 'Protection&apos. He states that introducing tariffs on imports - which the Conservatives suggest is to support home industries - will raise home prices and cause more poverty for the most needy.Undated, dated through copies held at the University of Oxford Libraries. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, bright and smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine . Ill.: Not Stated. Fine .
