Volume I of two. Dutch photographer Martien Coppens explores some of the most elaborate and attractive Gothic choir-stalls in the Netherlands, important elements in the ecclesiastical life. With illustrations of the choir-stalls of St. Peter's Church in Sittard, St. Martin's Church in Zaltbommel, St. John's Cathedral in Bois-le-Duc. Collated, complete with seventy full page plates. With an introduction by Coppens. The work was translated by G. de Haan. In the unclipped dust wrapper. He spent eight winters in the Antarctic and is a descendent of Captain George Back. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of polar exploration. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear and some minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. The dust wrapper is very smart, with some shelf wear and a minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine, tape repaired internally to the wraps. With Kenn Back's bookplate to the front pastedown.
