Bath , Printed and Sold by J. Browne; Crosby and Letterman, 1802. Leather. An early edition of this entertaining biography of Bamfylde-Moore Carew. An early edition of this work, originally published in 1745. Tracing the life, travels, and adventures of Bampfylde-Moore Carew, an English rogue, vagabond, and impostor of the eighteenth century. He was the self-proclaimed King of Beggars. A great success, this work went through numerous editions as books and chapbooks of this exciting and entertaining historical account. It is difficult to ascertain the validity of the contents of this volume, as some of the stories are too fantastic or literary. The book states that the contents were penned by Carew himself, however it is suggested it being authored by Robert Goadby. Including a canting dictionary to the rear with the language used by mendicants  Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved portrait of Carew. In a full calf biding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear and considerable rubbing to the boards and spine. Front board is loose but present. With Major Will Ayling library bookplate to the front pastedown. Undated previous ownership inscription Charles E Brown, possibly a commercial aviation photographer for the United Kingdom bearing the same name living 1896-1892. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved portrait of Carew. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .

ALCOTT, William A., Essay on the Construction of School-Houses, to which was awarded the prize offered by the American Institute of Instruction, August, 1831.
ALCOTT, William A.
Essay on the Construction of School-Houses, to which was awarded the prize offered by the American Institute of Instruction, August, 1831.
Boston, Hilliard Gray &c 1832. Octavo disbound; 66pp, two full page plans. Some spotting or browning but a pretty good copy.
¶ The first American work devoted to school buildings and their design. Alcott is not celebrated in architectural history, after all he was no architect but an educator, reformer and pamphleteer. But "the characteristic form of schoolhouses was established with the 1832 publication of William A. Alcott's 'Essay on the Construction of School-Houses'. Alcott stressed the importance of light, fresh air, and space in his designs." (Doggett and Wilson). Alcock was not dogmatic about the style of the building but he was about everything else, the site and landscaping, the timber for the floorboards and blackboards, the size and placing of each student's book box, the placing of coat pegs. All was to be healthy, rational, beneficial and beneficent. The American Institute of Instruction was itself new; this was the beginning of a new movement for universal education. Over the next few years these ideas spread, often in the briefest form: Alcock's plan and key. In 1839 the superintendent of schools in Michigan submitted Alcock's plan with few modifications to the legislature and this was in turn reprinted in a Connecticut journal.

 R. O. C. [Rose Owen Cole], The Official Handbook for the National Training School for Cookery Containing the Lessons on Cookery Which Constitute the Course of Instruction in the School
R. O. C. [Rose Owen Cole]
The Official Handbook for the National Training School for Cookery Containing the Lessons on Cookery Which Constitute the Course of Instruction in the School
London, Chapman and Hall, 1878. Cloth. A very scarce, second edition of the official handbook for the National Training School for Cookery providing comprehensive instruction and numerous late Victorian recipes. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. This volume is a second edition. Originally issued by the National Training School of Cookery in South Kensington (established 1873, renamed in 1902), this comprehensive work outlines the cookery lessons taught at the school, in structured "lesson" format. This edition covers utensils, cleaning materials, lessons on cleaning and lessons on cookery. The handbook was written to be easily understandable by those with 'no knowledge on the subject', and each clear and concise recipe completes with 'Now it is finished.' The book was compiled by R. O. C. Rose Owen Cole, and incorporated many of the recipes honed by teachers of the school, such as: Oatmeal Biscuits, Yorkshire Tea Cakes, Mutton Broth, Tomates Farcie au Gratin, Melted Butter Sauce, Stewed Lentils, Carrot Pudding, Batter Pudding, Alexandra Pudding, and Vennoise Pudding, to name a few. These Lessons on Cookery are encouraging and accessible, and the students of the school would no doubt have treasured their copy of this handbook. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in the odd closed tear and chip to head and tail of spine, especially the tail where the cloth is slightly loose, but holding. Slight rubbing to boards with the odd slight handling mark and slight discolouration. Hinges slightly cracked, partially exposing binding materials at endpapers, particularly the front hinge. Previous seller's label to rear paste down. Rubbing and the odd slight handling mark to endpapers. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper, "Ada Whituell". Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with the odd handling mark and spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge. Slight offsetting from pressed flowers or leaves to pages 30-35. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
