[Indonesia]. Reclame-Album 1903-1904 uitgegeven door de Naamlooze Vennootschap Algemeen Reclame Bureau "Excelsior" Bandoeng - Java - Nederlandsch-Indie. [Extremely rare limited hotel or ocean liner lobby book full of adverts and information for the Dutch East Indies traveller or expat].
Bandoeng, Reclame-Bureau "Excelsior", no date (1902/ 1903), 546 pag., b/w illustrations and adverts (partly printed in colours), articles in Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia), original brown cloth lettered in gilt and with adverts for Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (with onlaid gilt cloth diagional advert with Dutch flag over frontcover) and Rotterdamsche Lloyd and Van Arcken Bijouterie on frontcover with three inset mounted coloured plates, backcover with 5 metal knobs, large folio (49,5 x 33,5 cm.). = Very rare, only 1 copy in Worldcat (Leiden). Our copy numbered in coloured pencil on first free endpaper advertorial leaf: "Ex: no.158". This would have been a costly publication, distributed in a small number of copies (a hundred or two hundred at the most would be our educated guess) by the Excelsior advertorial company, not for trade but for display in city halls, banks or hotel lobbies. ocean liner lobbies, etc. to be consulted by newcomers such as expats, or local inhabitants and tourists as well.It is a true Fundgrube and contains a wealth of information on colonial life in the East Indies in the early twentieth century. Contains a shipload of advertisements for local businesses like hotels, newspapers, storages, pharmacies, estate agents, shipping companies, batik industry, insurance companies, business adviser bureaus, medical clinics, societies (i.a. for the blind), cars ("Maatschappij tot exploitatie rijtuigfabriek en van den handel in paarden v/h Fuchs Tanah Abang - Parapattan Weltevreden"), photographers (i.a. Charls & Van Es, Kurkdjian), machine manufacturers, gramophone company, tiger-traps, teas, banks, infantries ("Soerabajasche Jongens-Weezen Inrichting"), jewellers, costumes and fashion, Catholic Church of Soerabaia, nurseries, tools manufacturers, theatres, supermarkets and shopping malls, dentists, art galleries, beverages ("Bier Tjap Koeda"), toy shops, railways, time-tables for transport (i.a. "Pasoeroean Stoomtram Maatschappij"). The work also contains informative photo-illustrated articles in five languages on cities, villages, regions, tourist destinations (not only Java, also Moluccas, Celebes (Sulawesi), Sumatra), plantations etc. (alphabetically arranged), arrangements for postal services and telegraphs, steamboat connections to Singapore, Malaysia, chapters on Siam (Thailand), The Netherlands and a useful index on adverts on page 541-546.
