Wraps. 16mo; pp; 32; illustrated with seven hand colored lithographs; set within modern paper wrappers with a title label at center; the poem has been set to music at rear; trimmed closely at bottom affecting titles to two plates and one line of text; lacking original wrappers else very good. "The poem was first printed in 1833 in Britain in (Eliza) Follen's Little Songs for Little Boys and Girls. It was an addition to the volume and probably inserted by the publisher. In the introduction to a subsequent edition, Follen denied any hand in the poem's composition, but took it under her wing and claimed ownership as the poem passed through various reprints. The poem was first published in the United States in 1843 in Follen's New Nursery Songs for All Good Children. An 1856 American reprint was subtitled "A Cat's Tale, with Additions". In 1858 R. M. Ballantyne elaborated Follen's poem and published his prose version in a volume of the Good Little Pig's Library. This version included a musical setting for Follen's poem." A well preserved example that has been rescued by a previous owner. Good + .

With a coloured frontispiece and many black-and-white in-text images. A charming story following three kittens as they learn from their mother and search for their supper. Written by Robert Michael Ballantyne, a prolific Scottish author of juvenile fiction who wrote over one hundred books. Illustrated by F. A. Williams, an English artist and illustrator. In the original quarter yellow cloth binding with pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and minor chipping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Light scattered spotting to the endpapers. Very Good . Ill.: F. A. Williams. Very Good .

Publisher Dean & Son pioneered the production of moveable books on a large scale, using lithographs and moving tabs to create what they termed 'living pictures' from the late 1850s onwards.This work provides illustrations to accompany American poet Eliza Lee Cabot Follen's humorous poem about three kittens.Illustrated with eight hand-coloured plates, with moving parts. Plate I retains only one of the three cats heads required, with the mother cats head moving correctly but lacking an arm, and the three kittens entirely lacking.Plate II in full working order, with all parts present, and with the arm of the kitten neatly repaired.Plate III moving mechanism not functioning, with tabs renewed.
