ANASTAS, BENJAMIN
The Faithful Narrative of a Pastor's Disappearance
Garage Dark grey a5, Picador. 2002. (ISBN: 9780330487542). Hardcover, 13.5 x 2.5 x 21.6 cm. Hardback with dust jacket in good conditon. In this irresistible satire, adultery, real estate, religion and intrigue collide in suburban New England. Reverend Thomas Mosher, the young black pastor of the Pilgrims' Congregational Church in W-------, Massachusetts, has vanished without a trace. Does the rumoured affair between the pastor and Bethany Caruso, unhappily married mother of two, provide an explanation? Did Thomas's final sermon, 'The Shapes of Love', contain a clue? Did the congregation's white, liberal parishioners drive him away? Can people just - disappear? Bethany and the rest of the parish grapple with the ensuing crisis. Chief among them: Artemesia Angelis, a pious housewife; Margaret Howard, the imposing matriarch of a thriving real estate business; and Bobby Caruso, Bethany's husband, whose lack of interest in church affairs is matched only by Bethany's disdain for his 'fornicatorium', a hapless attempt to save their marriage. Benjamin Anastas examines the tensions between liberalism and provincial small-mindedness, and sketches the passions and prejudices of his characters with a playful but ultimately sympathetic eye, leaving us with a thoughtful, bittersweet portrait of the modern American soul. The Faithful Narrative of a Pastor's Disappearance is a bold, blisteringly funny and ultimately haunting satire of modern materialism. Good.

Bancroft, Aaron
A Sermon, Delivered at the Installation of the Rev. Andrew Bigelow, to the Pastoral Care of the Church in Medford, July 9, 1823. By Aaron Bancroft, D.D. Pastor of the Second Congregational Church in Worcester
Boston, John B. Russell, Printer, 1823. First edition. Removed. 28 pp. 8vo. Inscription on title page trimmed. Bigelow (1795-1887) was the fourth minister of the church. Differences had been brewing under the prior minister, David Osgood; and Aaron Bancroft (1755-1839), who was an intimate of Bigelow's father, warns him of this in his sermon: "The members of your society have formed dissimilar opinions on the important doctrines of the gospel, and they will all expect from you equal attention and tenderness; this will require accuracy of discrimination in your public sermons, and delicacy in your private intercourse." Bigelow, however, would not be able to reconcile the two groups. The Trinitarian dissidents would leave to form their own church while Bigelow's would remain Unitarian. Printed slip on p. 16 states: "The following charge [17-23 pp.] was given by the Rev. Ezra Ripley, D.D. of Concord; and the right hand of fellowship [25-28 pp.] by the Rev. James Walker of Charlestown." Sabin 3105n. Shoemaker 11673. A very good copy, scattered foxing, small chip on last leaf.
