The Auction of King William's Paintings (1713). Elite International Art Trade at the End of the Dutch Golden Age
John Benjamins B.V. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 371. The collection of Stadholder-King William III went under the hammer in Amsterdam on 26 July 1713. Organised by the renowned art collector and agent Jan van Beuningen with the assistance of Jan Pietersz. Zomer, the foremost Amsterdam art broker, the auction was a virtual society event attended by a host of Dutch regents, agents and diplomats as well as European noblemen and princes, including the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm, the Elector of Mainz Lothar Franz von Schönborn, Anton Ulrich Duke of Braunschweig and James Brydges Duke of Chandos. They were all interested in the pictures from the gallery at Het Loo Palace, William III`s summer residence. This book sheds new light on the actual auction and its organisation, placing it within the context of the international trade in art. It explores the links between culture agents, art brokers, bankers, diplomats, and collectors. The fascinating story of this public sale serves as a means of analysing the elite international art trade and its implementation at the end of the Dutch Golden Age. A wide range of previously unpublished archival material was consulted, making it possible to illustrate all aspects of the international art trade and the - court` policies of English and German noblemen relating to new acquisitions. Particular emphasis is placed on the functioning of the diplomatic networks that supplied art to the high nobility and foreign courts. The majority of the individuals featuring in this study were previously unknown and thus unstudied. Yet they dealt in sublime masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin, Rembrandt and many other leading artists. ISBN: 9789027249623. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Family, Culture and Society in the Diary of Constantijn Huygens Jr, Secretary to Stadholder-King William of Orange
Brill, 2013. Gekartonneerd. Pp: 195. Based on analysis of a diary kept by Constantijn Huygens Jr, the secretary to Stadholder-King William of Orange, this book proposes a new explanation for the invention of the modern, private diary in the 17th century. At the same time it sketches a panoramic view of Europe at the time of the Glorious Revolution and the Nine Years' War, recorded by an eyewitness. The book includes chapters on such subjects as the changing perception of time, book collecting, Huygens's role as connoisseur of art, belief in magic and witchcraft, and gossip and sexuality at the court of William and Mary. Finally this study shows how modern scientific ideas, developed by Huygens's brother Christiaan Huygens, changed our way of looking at the world around us. ISBN: 9789004250949. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

ACT OF PARLIAMENT
An Act for transferring the Duties of paving, lighting, watering, and cleansing Parts of the Crown Estate in the District of Regent's Park and certain Streets and Places in Westminster from the Commissioners acting under several Acts of Their late Majesties King George the Fourth and King William the Fourth to the Parishes; and for transferring the Jurisdiction of the said Commissioners over certain other Places in Westminster to the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Works and Public Buildings; and for other Purposes. [14 & 15 Vict. CAP. XCV.]
London, printed by George Edward Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty. 1851 [2], 759-776pp 32x21, disbound extract Edges browned and slightly chipped, very good thus for fragile item. Commonly known as the Crown Estate Paving Act, this legislation somewhat rationalised the complex series of private commissioners empowered to raise levies to pay for improvements to streets. The Crown Estate Paving Commission had been established in 1824, and was responsible for improvements on Crown Estate lands from Whitehall to Regents Park, primarily along Regent's Street. This Act removed Regents Street from its remit, but added the Park itself. The CEPC was not included in the municipal reforms of the late 19th century, and still exists and can - and does - levy charges on the 1200 or so buidings that come under its scope.
