410, [6]; [8], 168 pp.Ad. 1: One of the many Aesop editions based on the famous first illustrated edition by Jean de Tournes, Lyon 1571, which was a landmark in humanistic scholarship and printing with woodcuts by Bernard Salomon (Bodemann 29.1). The De Tournes family moved to Geneva in 1585 to escape religious persecution as Hugenots. In 1619 Jean de Tournes III sold his house in Lyon to the printer Guichard Juliéron, who probably issued the present edition in Lyon under the name of Jean de Tournes.Ad 2: A rare collection of Greek poetry and other works by Theognis and Phocylides, ideas and thoughts of Pythagoras, and the mottos of Solon. The editor and translator, Fredericus Sylberg (1536-1596) was a classical philologist working as a corrector and editor for the publisher Henr. Commelin at Heidelberg. Ad. 1: with owner’s entry on the front paste-down: "Sum ex libris Hugonis Suchier, Ritelii [= Rinteln], 1881". There are more than a dozen errors in the pagination, but both books are nevertheless complete. Some woodcuts slightly worn, boards slightly damaged. Ad. 2: minor water stains (pp. 115-158).l Ad 1: cf. Bodeman, 29.2. Ad 2: STCN (2 copies).

A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket Aesop is said to have been a Phrygian slave who lived around 570 B.C. This edition was first published in 1909, and includes 23 of Edward Detmold's beautiful animal paintings as well as many of his black-and-white drawings and more than 300 of Aesop's very wise tales. Edward J. Detmold, who was born in 1883, was one of England's greatest book illustrators and with his twin brother Charles Maurice were drawing the animals in Regents Park Zoo and the Natural History Museum and at the age of 13 were the youngest artists ever to exhibit their work at the Royal Academy. 22. AESOP
The Fables of Aesop
A5 front room beige brown hard to read spine, Contemporary Books. 1988. (ISBN: 9780809244850). Paperback. Paperback in good condition, small mark to front cover. Riccio, Frank (Illustrator). From Publishers Weekly This British husband-and-wife team has gleaned more than a hundred of the ancient storyteller's fables for this beguiling compendium. Well-known entries (e.g. "The Tortoise and the Hare"; "The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs") are presented cheek-by-jowl with lesser-known offerings ("The Bald Knight"; "The Crab and Her Baby"). As explained in a detailed foreword, the retellings are served up much as Aesop might have told them, unadorned by the clicheed moral epigrams that have come to be attached to his tales over the centuries. The abundant illustrations invite browsing as well as close reading: the pages are peppered with droll black-and-white sketches as well as energetic full-color watercolors. A table of contents and title index are useful additions. Used: Acceptable.
