He first emigrated to France (arriving in Lyon on May 17, 1933). From 1939 to 1940 he was a soldier in the French army. In March 1941 he emigrated to the USA. He is considered an exiled author. He was called Fischmann's Katz after his main work The Fishmans. His estate is in the German Exile Archive 1933-1945. He used different spellings of his name, e.g. B. Willi Katz, Bill Katz, Guillaume Katz, Herz Wolff and the pseudonym Willibald Kater. ISBN 9783484651333.
