Mrs. Isabella Beeton, The Englishwoman&Apos;S Cookery Book
Mrs. Isabella Beeton
The Englishwoman&Apos;S Cookery Book
London, S. O. Beeton, 1866. Cloth. A handy little cookery book by Mrs. Isabella Beeton, published the year following her death. A collection of economical recipes from Mrs. Beeton's extremely popular 'Book of Household Management&apos.First published in 1861, Mrs. Beeton's extensive guide to managing a Victorian household was a best-selling book. The author passed away in 1865; editions published soon after her death contained an obituary, which was removed in later editions, allowing the illusion that she was still alive and writing the recipes. In reality, much of the contents of the work were plagiarised from other successful Victorian food writers, such as Maria Eliza Rundell and Eliza Acton. By 1907, the work spanned over two thousand pages. By 1868, it had sold nearly two million copies, making it an extremely popular guide, held as standard by many at the time.Written by Isabella Mary Beeton (1836-1865), an English writer and journalist.Illustrated with in-text engravings. A new edition. An uncommon and early edition of this work. In a full cloth binding. Externally a trifle worn, with a few stains to the boards and a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, binding has failed between pages 186 and 207, leaving these pages loose. Otherwise, generally firmly bound. Pages are a touch age-toned. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
