The Truth of the Christian Religion. In Six Books. Corrected and Illustrated with Notes, By Mr. Le Clerc. To which is added, A Seventh Book, Concerning this Question, What Christian Church we ought to join ourselves to? By the said Mr. le Clerc. The Sixth Edition, with Additions: Particularly one whole Book of Mr. Le Clerc's, against Indifference of what Religion a Man is of. Done into English by John Clarke, D. D., Dean of Sarum.
London: Printed for C. Hitch and L. Hawes..., 1761. 8vo, 206 x 120 mms., pp. [xxxii], 350 [351 - 352 adverts], contemporary calf, red leather label; some scratching and very slight wear to binding, but generally a very good copy, with the armorial bookplate of John Henyer on the front paste-down end-paper. John Clarke (1682 - 1757), the younger brother of Samuel Clarke, first published this work in 1711, and it was undoubtedly the most popular exposition of Grotius' book in the 18th century. Le Clerc had published his edition of Grotius in 1709. Hugo Grotius, or Huigh de Groot (1583 - 1645), was a Dutch jurist, Arminian theologian, and missions apologist. In 1618 Grotius was sent to prison for his Arminian theological sympathies, by order of the Calvinist Prince Maurice of Nassau, but he escaped and settled in Paris. This is his most famous book, intended as a handbook for the use of Dutch sailors traveling to the Far East, is De Veritate Religionis Christianae (1627). Grotius gives "evidence" of the truth of the Christian religion and refutes paganism, Judaism, and Islam. He concludes his defense of Christianity with an admonition for all Christians to live simple, devout lives in peace and harmony. During his lifetime De Veritate was translated into English, French, and German; after his death 144 editions and translations were published, including an Arabic edition in 1660 and an Urdu edition in 1839. Richard Baxter recommended the Arab translation to the East India Company

London: Printed for Tho. He published a number of works in this popular "question and answer" form, and this work was still being reprinted as late as 1811. The Gentleman's Magazine said of Lockman that he translated "with general accuracy, more books for half a century together than any man of his time." He was also an accomplished musician and composer, with oratorios and musical dramas to his credit. This is a reprinting, reimposed, of the English text of a bilingual edition printed by William Bowyer for Vaillant and Astley (T89730); his records show 3000 copies of this printing divided equally between the two booksellers. Maslen & Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers, 2191. ESTC T155111 locates copies in BL, Bodleian; Library Company of Philadelphia, University of Chicago.
