The backstrip is chipped with some loss (as is common with this series of books), there is a bookplate to the front pastedown and some creasing of the endpapers; overall, this book is just about in good condition. Covers Cheshire and the southern part of Lancashire (between the rivers Mersey and Ribble).

The fourth edition of this work. Very scarce to find a contemporary copy. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With publisher's advertisements to the endpapers and pastedowns. A fascinating historical work comprising a list of all landowners of two or three thousand acres or more, alongside their values, income, colleges, clubs and services. Compiled by John Bateman, an English civil engineer whose work formed the basis of the modern United Kingdom water supply industry. From the library of Sir Archibald Berkeley Milne, 2nd Baronet (1855-1938) a senior Royal Navy officer who commanded the Mediterranean Fleet at the outbreak of the First World War. Milne was the son of distinguished admiral Sir Alexander Milne, 1st Baronet, and grandson of Vice-Admiral Sir David Milne. In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart. With rubbing and bumping to the extremities, heaviest to the spine head and tail. Hinges are tender. Fading to the spine and a few marks to the boards. Bookplate of one Sir A. Berkeley Milne to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Front free endpapers are disbound but present. A very scarce work. In the original cloth boards. This extracted data shows the number and names of owners of land of one acre and upwards, together with introductory remarks of the original Domesday Book. Based on the data of 'Return of Owners of Land, 1873', which was the first complete picture of the distribution of land ownership in Great Britain since the Domesday Book of 1086, earning it the nickname 'Modern Domesday&apos. Compiled by Wynne Edwin Baxter, an English lawyer who is best known as the coroner who conducted the inquests on most of the victims of the Whitechapel Murders of 1888-1891. This includes victims of "Jack the Ripper" and the "Elephant Man". With a large folding table displaying the data. In the original cloth covered boards. Externally, sound. With binding at risk of failing with further handling. Fading to the cloth and spotting to the title label. With wear to the spine.
