Ephemera for the Colophon
New York, The Colophon , 1931-37. Loose Pages, Articles. A very scarce series of eleven ephemera for the American quarterly periodical of 'The Colophon' for the 1930s, including advertising prospectus, subscribers promotional leaflets, and more. A group of eleven 'Colophon' ephemera, in their original paper envelop 'Introducing a Book Collector's Quarterly The Colophon.' These include five prospectus for subscribers and other promotional leaflets, letters from editors, and subscription forms dated 1931 to 1937.The Colophon was an American quarterly periodical for book lovers established in 1929 by Elmer Adler, whose idea was to group various printers from all around the world to contribute with articles using their own choice of paper, typography, and illustrations. The content was generally of historical issues related to printing, publishing or art, however it typically ranged in style, papers, and typography. Notably, this collection includes the 1933 prospectus 'Three Years and This Year: A record of the Colophon adventure and an invitation to partake of its future,' a brochure dedicated to subscribers as a mark of appreciation, only printed in a limited series, unnumbered. It contains much information on the Colophon with illustrations; a prospectus presenting the 'New Series,' produced from 1935 to 1938; and 'Not by Bread Alone,' a prospectus of the Colophon Annual of Book-making and an Appendix describing the Colophon. A very scarce collection.  Five prospectus in the original publisher's paper wraps and various loose leaflets and forms. In the original paper envelop, with some shelf wear and edge wear as well as the minor odd faint mark. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. With illustrations in text. Near Fine . Ill.: Not Stated. Near Fine .

[8], 319, [1 blank] pp.Third edition (all published in Latin translation, the first in 1497) of three books of surgery by the Arabic physician Abu al-Quasim (ca. 936-1009/13 CE in Andalusia), known in the West as Abulcasis and here erroneously “Albucasis”. The text is taken from parts of his principal work, the surgical handbook al-Tasrif. Topics covered by the three books include cauterization (book 1), making incisions and blood-letting (book 2) and fractures and dislocated limbs (book 3). A fourth edition appeared under the title Methodus medendi in 1541.Abu al-Quasim became personal physician to Hakam II, Calif of Western Califate centred on Cordova. His handbook was translated into Latin in the 12th century by Gerard of Cremona in Toledo and helped bring Arabic surgical knowledge to Europe, where surgery had been separated from academic medical training. opening with a full-page woodcut of a man with about thirty different kinds of injuries (and shown with the weapons and other instruments that caused the injuries still in place, cutting, stabbing and otherwise injuring him)The present edition combines two independent medical works, but although Abu al-Quasim’s manual (k4r-dd6v, pp. 117-319), is almost twice as extensive and more important in the history of medicine - so that we present it first - it actually follows the shorter work, the first edition of the four books of the Rerum medicarum by the Greek physician at Constantinople (Istanbul), Theodorus Priscianus (a1r-k3v, pp. 1-112). The four books cover external ailments, internal ailments, women’s ailments and physiology. An 8vo edition appeared at Basel in the same year, but it omits the entire fourth book and parts of the first two. It went through several further editions.Contemporary inscription in ink on last blank page. A few tiny holes in the first 2 pages. First 4 pages browned. Minor foxing to the title-page. Paper slightly browned overall. Some stains in the margins throughout. Otherwise in very good condition.l Adams P2119; Benzing, Straßburg I, 1514; Choulant, Handb. 217; Durling 3764; Hirsch-H. LXXXIII ll.Fourth edition of a collection of seven treatises on medicine and philosophy, edited by Alessandro Achillini (1463-1512), originally published as Secretum secretorum at Bologna in 1501 (perhaps without the second and third works). It first appeared under the present title in 1520. Achillini was one of the greatest anatomists of his time and an influential teacher. He studied philosophy and medicine at the university of Bologna, where he was appointed lecturer of philosophy in 1484 and of medicine in 1495. From 1506 to 1508 he also taught at Padua. Four of the works in the present collection are pseudo-Aristotelian works that had been well known since the 13th century or earlier. The Secreta secretorum is here present in the translation of Philip of Tripoli; the De signis aquarum, ventorum et tempestatum on weather signs, was translated in the 13th century by Bartholomew of Messina; the third pseudo-Aristotle is De mineralibus on gems; the fourth, Alexandri Macedonis ad Aristotelem de mirabilibus Indie, is a fictitious letter by Alexander the Great to his teacher Aristotle, describing the wonders of India and the East. All four of them were accepted during the later Middle Ages as reliable literary portraits of the Indians, especially of the Brahmans. The three remaining treatises in the present work consist of a work by Alexander of Aphrodisias on the intellect, another by Averroes on the beauty of the soul, and a work by Achillini himself on universals. Vervliet, Vine leaf ornaments 54, cites the present edition as the first use of its ornament.Very good copy, with very slight browning and a few marginal spots, lacking the final blank. Binding lacking straps and clasps, and with the (restored?) spine damaged.l Baudrier V, p. 104; Stillwell 578; USTC 155810 (8 copies); cf. Lach II, book 2, p. 94 (for De mirabilibus Indie); Thorndike V, pp. 47-48 (1501 & 1520 eds.).

Historie naturael ende morael van de Westersche Indien.Enkhuizen, Jacob Lenaertsz. Meyn (colophon: Haarlem, printed by Gillis Rooman), 1598. 8vo. With a woodcut decoration on the title-page. Vellum (ca. 1700?).
[7], 398, [8] ll.First Dutch edition of "the most convincing, detailed and reliable account of the riches and new things of America" (Streeter), written by the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta (1539/40-1600) and translated by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten from the original Spanish. The "West Indies" of the title still referred at this date to the New World as a whole, and the book concentrates on the Spanish possessions in Peru and Mexico, covering the Inca and Aztec people, customs, history, botany, zoology, mineral riches, trade, products, and much more. It was this book above all others that opened the eyes of the Dutch, the English and the rest of Europe to the extraordinary wealth Spain was reaping from its possessions in the New World, and it includes practical information such as sailing instructions, accounts of diseases, etc. With a 1645 owner's inscription, library stamps and the armorial bookplate of the Marchese of Bernezzo on the back of the title-page. With some repairs in the first two quires, the title-page rather worn and two leaves somewhat browned, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is scuffed and has cracks in the vellum at the front hinge, but is still good and structurally sound. The most influential early work on America, in its first Dutch edition.l Alden & Landis 598/3; Palau 1992; Sabin 126; cf. Streeter 32 (1604 Eng. ed.).
