Robert Mapplethorpe - The Black Book
Schirmer/Mosel, 1992. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 91. German edition. The Black Book, first published in 1986, presents 96 formally stringent and highly erotic nudes, all of them photographs of black men, either as full figures, or staged as details, as fragments of their bodies. Stylized as classical statues or provocatively in all their presence and sensuous radiance. Black-and-white photography was Mapplethorpe's preferred medium. And his obsessive aesthetics was based on completely mastering it. ISBN: 9783888142147. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

[6], 119, [1 blank] pp.First edition of this annotated translation of volume 8 of Al-Hamdani's al-Iklil by Nabih Amin Faris (1906-1968), who was a historian and professor of Arab history at the American University of Beirut. The al-Iklil (in full: Kitab al-Iklil min akhbar al-Yaman wa-ansab ?imyar or in English: Crowns from the Accounts of al-Yemen and the genealogies of ?imyar) is a ten-volume historical and geographical work by the Arab geographer, traveller, poet, astronomer, chemist, grammarian, and historian Abu Muhammad al-?asan ibn A?mad ibn Yaqub al-Hamdani (ca. 893-945). Al-Hamdani was born in Sana'a, he travelled throughout the Arabian Peninsula before returning to Sana'a. There he was imprisoned because of his political and religious views, after his release he left the city in order to write and compile his works in relative peace. He was one of the most prolific South Arabian scholars with several extensive works to his name, however, of his al-Iklil only 4 of the 10 volumes have survived. The present work concerns volume 8, in which Al-Hamdani mainly describes public buildings and castles: the pre-Islamic antiquities of Yemen. His works, including one on the geography of the Arabian Peninsula, are some of the earliest and most complete Arabic sources on Arabia. They were the subject of extensive German and Austrian scholarship during the 19th century, before this English edition appeared as volume 3 of the Princeton Oriental Texts.Binding shows very slight signs of wear, slight browning throughout but mostly to the first and last few pages, edges very slightly foxed, several inscriptions and a stamp, including two ownership inscriptions belonging to professor Rudi Paret, on the first flyleaf. Overall in very good condition.l Macro 33; Smith, The Yemens, 146.

56; 72; [8] pp.Highly important work on shipbuilding showing all facets of this trade, with 208 beautifully contemporary hand coloured plates. It is also one of the first extensive flag books. The treatise was one of the most used sea manuals at the time, but today is very rare, especially in such fine contemporary colouring. Although there are very few copies of it left as is (we have only been able to trace three other copies in sales records and five in libraries), most of them lack the third volume. The present copy, however, is complete.Niewe Hollandse scheeps-bouw is an essential primary source for the terminology and practice of shipbuilding in the Dutch Golden Age. It details everything one would need to know about ships, shipbuilding, rigging and maritime flags. The first plate gives a very detailed image of a three-masted ship (including the parts under water) and its rigging, with more than 150 elements keyed with letters or numbers to the list on pages 4 to 8. The second volume contains multiple double-page plates with cross sections of various parts of a ship, as well as plates depicting the tools of the trade, which helps one understand the ship-building process. It also contains a short section on compasses and navigation. The majority of the plates, however, show maritime flags. In fact, both the second and third volume were added because the first was missing a number of flags. The section of flags, spread out across all three volumes, is very extensive. It includes the flags of numerous cities and countries across the world, as well as signal flags.Carel or Carolus Allard (1648-1709) was a Dutch publisher and engraver. He is primarily known for his maps and atlases. He not only published the present work, but also wrote it and most likely engraved all the plates. The first and second volume of the work were first published in 1695. The present copy is the second edition, extended with the supplementary third volume published in 1705. The work was later also translated into Russian (1708) and French (1719).The title page is slightly browned and has been reinforced along the upper margin, the title page and first leaf have both been reattached with a strip of paper in the inner margin, plate 29 of volume 1 has been restored in the lower outer corner, without affecting the image. Overall in excellent condition.l Cat. BANNERMAN Helen
The Story of Little Black Mingo. THE AUTHOR'S SECOND BOOK
Nisbet,, n.d. [c.1930]. 16mo., with coloured frontispiece and 34 full-page coloured illustrations in the text, some very light and occasional age-soiling to text (rather heavier on white margins of one or two plates); original pink cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, red endpapers, boards lightly faded at upper edges else a very good, firm copy. The author's second book, first published in 1901. Born in Edinburgh, Helen Bannerman (1862-1946) was a gifted children's illustrator who married a doctor in the Indian Medical Service and lived near Madras. Written for her daughters, her first three books, 'Little Black Sambo' (1899), 'Little Black Mingo' (1901) and 'Little Black Quibba' (1902) were set in an imaginary jungle world based on their real-life surroundings. All three titles (especially the first) were unusually successful and her second publisher, Nisbet, urged her to continue. Bannerman determined to create a series of cautionary tales emphasising the acumen of children (in this case of a young, girl who outwits a large crocodile). The stark nature of the tale is complemented by the curiously naive but graphic illustrations that derive extra impact from their simplicity. Disturbing by today's standards, the quasi-African setting and cold rationalism of the piece are entirely typical of the story's Edwardian context. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. See Horne, p.89.
