The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work.An account of the proceedings upon the charges against Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany by Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle. Wardle was an army officer and, whilst serving as an M.P. developed an interest in corruption in the army. He alleged that Prince Frederick's mistress, Mary Anne Clarke, was promising promotion to officers in return for money. Wardle pursued a legal case against the Duke of York and secured his resignation as commander-in-chief. Following this resignation it emerged that Wardle had negotiated with Clarke regarding Prince Frederick before his parliamentary attack and that her testimony was bought.Mary Anne Clarke was the great-great-grandmother of Daphne du Maurier, who wrote a novel about her life, 'Mary Anne&apos. A Letter of Thanks to Mr Benjamin Bennet for His Moderate Rebuke of an Insolent Pamphlet, Entitled, Presbyterian Prejudice Display&Apos;D. In Which the Great Candour, and Distinguish&Apos;D Moderation of the Worthy Presbyterian Teacher, Are Set Forth, and His Polite Language, and Flowers of Rhetorick, Put in One View, for the Diversion and Satisfaction of the Reader.
London, Thomas Osborne, 1723. First edition. Brochure/Pamphlet. This letter traces clashes between Zachary Grey and Benjamin Bennet over the latter's narrative of the Reformation. In this letter, an anonymous writer thanks the English Presbyterian minister Benjamin Bennet for his rebuke of Zachary Grey's work Presbyterian Prejudice Display'd. Building on a sermon preached on George I's coronation, Bennet published A Memorial of the Reformation in 1717. The work provided a Protestant view of the Reformation, and preserved anecdotes from original sources that had not been found elsewhere, such as of Judge Jeffreys's visit to Newcastle in 1683. Zachery Grey, an English priest, controversialist, and conservative spokesman for the Church of England then attempted to smear Bennet's narrative with his work Presbyterian Prejudice Display'd, in which he attempts to clear up 'mistaken historical facts' and re-establish 'the characters of several worthy members of the Church of England&apos. Unbound, with the majority of the calf remaining the spine. Externally, generally smart. The outer pages are a little age-toned, with a small tear at the front joint near the tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and very lightly foxed. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
