Some interesting features of this volume are an essay about the views of of writers and poets, ancient and modern, on the use and abuse of tobacco; a review of VOYAGES AND DISCOVERIES OF THE COMPANIONS OF COLUMBUS by Washington Irving (upon the work's first appearance); and a review of a poem called THE SIAMESE TWINS by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, author of the novel PELHAM (and popularizer of the threadbare story opener, "It was a dark and stormy night").
