He is best remembered for his long, blank-verse dramatic monologue on death, 'The Complaint: or, Night Thoughts&apos. The poem was inspired by the unfortunate deaths of his stepdaughter, her husband, and Young"s wife, that took place in the span of five years. Samuel Butler was a renowned poet and satirist, and author of the most memorable burlesque poem in the English language 'Hudibras&apos. This satiric poem, published in several parts beginning in 1663, was the first English satire to make a notable and successful attack on ideas rather than on personalities. Indeed, the work is directed against militant Puritanism, and more specifically the fanaticism, pretentiousness, pedantry, and hypocrisy that Butler identified in the movement. Charles Churchill was a renowned eighteenth century satirist, best known for 'The Rosciad', his first successful poem published in 1761. The work detailed the faults of the various actors and actresses on the London stage with biting humour and recklessness, and was incredibly popular. However, as expected, Churchill's satire made him many enemies, and prompted counter attacks from his subjects, with many publisher's refusing to produce his work. 'The Poetical Works of Edward Young' and 'The Poetical Works of Samuel Butler' contain a fascinating memoir of each poet by the renowned English clergyman and man of letters John Mitford. 'The Poetical Works of Charles Churchill features a memoir by James L. Hannay, with notes by W. Tooke. Each volume is undated, dated using Copac.
