Boards a little warped, slightly worn on edges; slight foxing, mostly of prelims; few thumbmarks. Decorated brown cloth. Stories written between 1909 and 1913, mostly war stories or humour, some set in South Africa. "Full Back" is an imaginary war story with slightly advanced technology; "The Sense of Touch" is a horror story about advanced motion picture technology. During World War I Sir Ernest Dunlop Swinton (1868-1951), a Royal Engineer, advocated the use of caterpillar tractors for trench-crossing, developed the idea of tanks, and commanded the tank training force. A collection of short stories including The Great Tab Dope: A Study in Staff Rides, The Sense of Touch, Sergeant Snodgrass, and The Culvert on the Summit. Ernest Swinton was a British Army Officer who was active in the adoption of the tank during World War I. He wrote several allegorical works of fiction on military themes. Full calf leather binding with gilt lettering to spine, gilt fore edge and marbled end papers. There is little wear to the extremities apart from some sunning to the spine. The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spots affecting the front and rear end papers in particular. Good .
