[1], [1 blank], [32], [1 blank], 417, [1 blank], [2] pp.First edition of this important and popular account of the unfortunate and famous expedition of George Anson, being considered as “the one most sought after” (Borba de Moraes). It is an account of Anson’s expedition to the western coast of South America, to harass the Spanish trading territories and cutting off the Spanish supplies of wealth in this way after the outbreak of the War of Jenkins’s Ear between Britain and Spain in 1739. Anson was the commander of 7 ships in 1740, including the Centurion, but soon his expedition threatened to turn into a fiasco. His squadron was battered by storms and bad weather causing damage and shipwrecks and many of his crew died from scurvy, typhus and dysentery. The remaining crew was transferred to the Centurion, the last remaining vessel, and Anson limped across the Pacific to Macao. In June 1743 he sailed to the Philippines were he achieved a substantial victory near Manila by capturing the Nuestra Senora de Covadonga, a Spanish galleon filled with gold. After sailing around the world, Anson returned to England in June 1744 and in spite of his enormous losses, he returned with large profits.Anson’s voyage, being one of the greatest voyages in the history of exploration and naval warfare, laid the foundation for British voyages and exploration of the Pacific and more specific for English trade in this area. The present account, being based upon Anson’s own ship journal, describing this troubled expedition, soon became highly popular in the 18th century and is even considered as “the masterpiece of descriptive travel” and “the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century” (Hill). With occasionally a correction of the text in brown ink and the name of Mr. Sweeting (?) added to the list of subscribers. Binding slightly worn around the edges and with a few minor scratches on the boards, some marginal foxing and staining to both the text leaves and plates (especially in the first part, barely affecting the plates except the map of the Pacific Ocean which is a little more stained), folding lines of some plates (especially all three large folding maps) reinforced but sometimes still with some very small tears on the folding lines, some corners of the folding plates slightly frayed, but overall a copy of the first edition of this important 18th-century travelogue with all the plates which is still in good condition.l Alden/Landis 748/225; Borba de Moraes I, p. 38; Cox I, p. 49; ESTC T89475; Hill 1817; Howgego A-100; Kroepelien 1086; Sabin 101175 (cf. 1625).

With 1 folding engraved map of the world depicting all the world-wide seas and waters and several tables printed within the text. Later half calf.
XXVIII, 29-234 pp.First edition of a rare geographical and meteorological treatise on the winds and weather in different places around the world, written by James Capper (1743-1825). Capper was a former colonel in the East India Company, but after his return to England, he devoted much of his time to meteorology. In his present Observations of the winds and monsoons, Capper especially concentrates on the winds and weather of the East Indies, the coast of India and the Arabian and Persian Gulf, using information he obtained by his own observations, some ships' logs and earlier publications. He also discusses the meteorology of the Mediterranean, including Greece and the climate between the Adriatic and the Archipelago. He describes in a very scholarly manner several kinds of winds, such as monsoons, hurricanes or the so-called “Sumyel”, which is an east wind, and the “Harmattan”, which is a land wind that also blows, according to Capper, in the Gulf of Guinea and along the other western coasts of Africa. He discusses their effect on the climate and the weather. Although he acknowledges in his preface that he borrows some information from other scholars, such as Bacon, Franklin, Bishop Watson, Kirwan "and other eminent philosophers", Capper also introduces a new hypothesis in this work, namely that hurricanes are a type of whirlwind. This makes Capper's Observations on the winds and monsoons not only a survey of what was already known about winds and weather in different parts of the world, supplemented with his own observations, but also an important original contribution - due to his own travels with the East India Company. Moreover, it gives a lively and extensive account of the direction of prevailing winds and the climate in different parts of the world, with particular detail for the Indian coasts and the Arabian and Persian Gulf.Library stamp on the last page. Covers discoloured. Map slightly foxed. Otherwise in good condition.l Lowndes, p. 369.

[12], 1-228, 333-592, *457-*592, 593-654, [6]; XXVI, 642; [7], [1 blank]; [8], 584, [4]; pp.First edition of a three-volume work on natural history written by the British botanist, apothecary and physician John Hill (1707?-1775), well-known for his voluminous publications on (natural) science. His main interest was botany, but he also covers zoology, medicine and mineralogy. His A general natural history can be regarded as his main work, because each volume was influential on its own. The history of fossils (vol. 1, labeled 3) is Hill’s first and nearly only publication on mineralogy. He describes the minerals, often based on microscopic examination, and on that basis divides them into series, classes and orders. The folding table at the end of this volume shows a classification system for fossils. The volume on plants (vol. 2, labeled 1) could be regarded as Hill’s major publication on botany. In this volume "Hill introduced the classification system of Linnaeus to England" (DSB). He describes several species and sorts of plants, their physical appearance, size, geographic range and rarity. He describes algae, fungi and cacti, but also flowers such as gladiolas, hyacinths and daffodils. He also describes more exceptional trees, such as the coffee tree and the tamarinde tree, and vegetables and herbs, such as parsnip, anise and coriander. Sometimes the English common names of some plants are printed in gothic type. The volume on animals (vol. 3, labeled 2) describes different classes of the animal kingdom and can be seen as Hill's principal achievement in the field of zoology. It opens with an extensive description of microscopic animals, followed by a description of insects, spiders, beetles and butterflies. He also describes crabs, hermit crabs, starfishes, cuttlefishes, sea horses and different kinds of fishes in general. Also different kinds of amphibians and reptiles. Mammals receive special attention, including squirrels, rabbits, bears, apes, lions, tigers, elephants, camels, goats and antilopes, but also more exceptional animals, such as the manatee and walrus. The bird section is also very extensive, including parrots, owls, falcons, buzzards, ducks and cranes, but also more exotic birds as the toucan and bird of paradise. The three volumes together contain 56 hand-coloured engraved plates with many images, accompanying the text. The extensive text together with these images make Hill’s book a very useful reference work on natural history that could be read and used by a common or a scientific public. With the bookplate (in 2 vols. with traces in the third) of Karin Mellegers. Each volume also contains an owner's inscription of “... Baker” and marginal annotations throughout, especially in the “General table” in vol. 3, probably from the same hand. Bindings slightly worn, corners bumped, head of the spines cracked or worn. First plate of vol. 2 partly loose. Some offsetting from the coloured plates, some occasional foxing. Otherwise in good condition, the hand-coloured plates very good.l Anker 210 (vol. 3); Freeman 1672; Johnston 420; Nissen ZBI, 1939; Stafleu & Cowan 2767; for the author: DSB VI, pp. 400-401.

A French edition was published in the same year, but replaced the volume on Dutch history with a work on French history. Due to the charm of this miniature library, a facsimile edition was published in 1984. The present set, however, is the first edition, which is rare on the market and only available in a few libraries. Many miniature books were primarily written for children. As was usually the case with children's books published before the 20th century, miniature books were typically instructional or educational in nature. Although they have existed since at least the early 17th century, they were only specifically marketed towards children from the mid-18th century onwards. Children's books from the end of the 18th century were often influenced by the theories of Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), who thought that children should learn through play and at their own pace. According to Welsh, the present works show Rousseau's ideas because they present the information through short stories. The edges and corners of the box are somewhat scuffed and the gold trimming on the lid has come loose in some spots, with some loss of material. The paper wrappers of some of the volumes show some signs of wear. A few pages loose in ads 5, 8 and 9, but they are still included. Otherwise in very good condition.l Saalmink, p. 211; Welsh, A bibliography of miniature books 1247; cf. Bondy, p. 75 (French ed.); Welsh, The history of miniature books, p. 74 (2nd ed.).

Le pavé de la grand' sale des bourgeois. [Amsterdam, Gerard Valk, 1719]. Very large engraved folding plan comprising 1 1/2 sheets (measuring 46 x 83 cm as assembled), engraved by Danckert Danckertsz. and his father after drawings by Jacob Vennekool, including the two hemispheres of the world map and a celestial map of the constellations of the northern hemisphere (each 10 cm in diameter).
Very large engraved plan showing the extraordinary cartographic mosaic floor of the Burgerzaal of the Amsterdam City Hall, designed by Jacob van Campen, with a celestial map in the centre and the magnificent map of the world in 2 hemispheres on either side. The engraving was first published in 1661, and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania, and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th-century. This engraved representation is all that is left of this cartographical work of art. Wear caused by people walking on the mosaic meant it had to be restored about a hundred years later. When in turn this restoration was damaged the two hemispheres were filled in with plain marble slabs without pictorial representation. The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen, and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed, they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also, of course, show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Slightly wrinkled in the right margin, one fold reinforced and a few tiny spots, otherwise in very good condition.l Cf.
