¶ On the first blank is written - 'Margaret Compton, from her loving Godmother E Camilla Gurdon, Dec 1892'. Most likely to be Lady Eveline Camilla Gurdon ( nee Wallop ). Lady Eveline [ 1858 - 1894 ], was a daughter of the 5th Earl of Portsmouth. She married Sir William Brampton Gurdon, whose home was at Assington Hall, Suffolk, in 1887. She was the author of many stories and articles based on East Anglian folklore. Margaret Compton is possibly Lady Margaret Louisa Lizzie Compton [ 1886 - 1970 ], daughter of William George Spencer Scott Compton, 5th Marquess of Northampton.

A very good full leather binding with gilt label to front board. 4to. 12.50" x 10.25" x 1.75". Unpaginated. Polished black morocco over thick boards. Corners bumped. Front board with dulled gilt label: "The United Parishes Of S. Margaret Lothbury, S. Christopher Le Stocks, S. Bartholomew By The Exchange." Spine with 5 raised bands and dulled gilt title: "Common Prayer". All page edges gilt (now a little dulled), Original yellow endpapers soiled. Light spotting to free-endpapers. Title-page in red & black. Clear English text throughout in double columns. Each page within a red-lined border. Pages refering to Morning and Evening Prayer soiled due to previous regular use. With 4 black silk marker ribbons. A very good 19th century parayer book with an interesting provenance. ** "St Christopher le Stocks was a parish church on the south side of Threadneedle Street in the Broad Street Ward of the City of London. Of Medieval origin, it was rebuilt following the Great Fire of London in 1666, but demolished to make way for an extension of the neighbouring Bank of England. The parish was united with that of St Margaret Lothbury in 1781, and the church pulled down the next year. In 1839 Saint Bartholomew by the Exchange was added when its church was also demolished. ".

It is among some of the finest products of the nineteenth-century press prior to the fine press movement at the end of the century. Good.
