Thomas Belsham
A Review of Mr. Wilberforce&Apos;S Treatise, Entitled Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians, &C. In Letters to a Lady
London, J. Johnson, 1798. First edition. Cloth. A smartly bound copy of this very scarce first edition of Belsham's review of Mr. Wilberforce's treatise on religious systems of Christianity. First edition. Very scarce work. A review, written by Thomas Belsham, an English Unitarian minister, after his conversion to Unitarianism. The commentary regards the writings of William Wilberforce, a British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the Atlantic slave trade. Wilberforce underwent a conversion experience and became an Evangelical Anglican, which resulted in major changes to his lifestyle and a lifelong concern for reform. 'A Practical View' was an exposition of New Testament doctrine and teachings and a call for a revival of Christianity, as a response to the moral decline of the nation, illustrating Wilberforce's own testimony and the views which inspired him. Belsham felt these ideas neglected the genuine doctrine of Christ, as detailed in his responses here. Bound in full modern cloth. Externally, excellent with the odd small mark to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the extremities. A closed tear to the contents page has been sympathetically repaired with tape, with the first few pages reinforced at the hinge. Library ink stamp and blind stamp to the title page, with additional ink stamps to the reverse of the title page and rear endpaper. Library bookplates to the pastedowns. Very Good . Ill.: None.
