William Morris' and his Icelandic teacher Eiríkr Magnússon translate the thirteenth century Icelandic saga. With twelve illustrations, collated and complete. With images of Morris' calligraphic manuscript from which the translation was taken, this volume contains the first printing of his translation of the Kormaks saga. Written in the first half of the thirteenth century, the saga tells of the tenth-century Icelandic poet Kormak Ogmundsson and of the love of his life, Steingerd Torkelsdatter, to whom he is betrothed. The saga preserves a significant number of poems attributed to Kormak, many of them dealing with his love for Steingerd. Although William Morris is perhaps best known for his textile designs, he was also a prolific writer, and published several translations of Old Norse literature. In a green quarter leather binding over grey cloth boards. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the spine, a little more so to the head and tail of the spine.
