Bath , Printed and Sold by J. Browne; Crosby and Letterman, 1802. Leather. An early edition of this entertaining biography of Bamfylde-Moore Carew. An early edition of this work, originally published in 1745. Tracing the life, travels, and adventures of Bampfylde-Moore Carew, an English rogue, vagabond, and impostor of the eighteenth century. He was the self-proclaimed King of Beggars. A great success, this work went through numerous editions as books and chapbooks of this exciting and entertaining historical account. It is difficult to ascertain the validity of the contents of this volume, as some of the stories are too fantastic or literary. The book states that the contents were penned by Carew himself, however it is suggested it being authored by Robert Goadby. Including a canting dictionary to the rear with the language used by mendicants  Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved portrait of Carew. In a full calf biding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear and considerable rubbing to the boards and spine. Front board is loose but present. With Major Will Ayling library bookplate to the front pastedown. Undated previous ownership inscription Charles E Brown, possibly a commercial aviation photographer for the United Kingdom bearing the same name living 1896-1892. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved portrait of Carew. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .

'Rules and Regulations of the Dundee Wilton Waver Lodge', published by William Brown in 1832. With a folding table. This shows an interesting view on how Scotland was developing as a country in the nineteenth century. It suddenly became a leader in modern industry, which happened quite unexpectedly. The population of the country grew rapidly in this century, going from around 1.6 million in the 1801 census, to 4.4 million in the 1901 census. The economy began to industrialise after being long based on agriculture, with the leading industry being the spinning and weaving of cotton, and also coal mining. Because of this, there was a growing emphasis on public health and welfare, due to the rapid housing being built that became more cramped, as the housing and provision for public health did not keep up pace with the growing population. The living conditions in some of the cities were notoriously bad, with a high infant mortality rate, and growing rates of tuberculosis. These pamphlets show the interested of Scottish politics during these years, and show how they were trying to adapt the country to the industrial revolution. In a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto and verso of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. The occasional prior owner's ink inscription to some of the title pages. Some pages are uncut to the fore edge. Some loss to the top edge of pages 11-14 of 'An Act to Reorganise the Educational Endowments of Scotland [18th August 1882].&apos. The occasional ink annotation to the margins. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
