An uncommon copy of this little children's book, containing a series of cautionary tales in verse. From the 'Illustrated Shilling Series of Forgotten Children's Books.' Featuring the previously printed text block with an additional four leaves of publisher's advertisements to 'The Leadenhall Press' printed on different, more contemporary paper. When the press ran out of original text blocks, the series continued to be printed on more modern paper, such as that used for the advertisements. Featuring thirty engravings in text. In the original publisher's printed boards binding with titles to front board label. Externally with chipping and slight loss to spine, chipping to extremities. Boards lightly soiled. Pictorial sticker to rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean with only a touch of age toning, as usual with the type of paper used. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .

Illustrations in all volumes collated and complete. Includes Boyhood Stories of Famous men, Stories from Dickens, Stories from Scottish History, Stories from Old English and Celtic Sources and Women of the Classics. Whilst Katherine Dunlop Cather mixes fact and fiction for her stories about the childhoods of men such as Mozart, Chopin, and Rembrandt, J. Walker McSpadden reconfigures the stories of Dickens by focussing on solely one their protagonists, including David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and Pip. Stories from Scottish history offers selected stories from Walter Scott's Tales of a Grandfather, whilst Britain Long ago retells Celtic folktales and Women of the classics puts the spotlight on classical characters such as Helen, Circe, Calypso and Nausicaa Reprints dated between 1926 and 1930, in decorative bindings. Boyhood, Stories of Famous men and Britain Long Ago have sticker from 'Harold Cleaver limited, Bookseller, Bath' on front pastedown. Stories of famous men has ink inscription of prior owners name to recto of front endpaper and a blind stamp for 'Westfield House, Hadstock, Somerset' on this page, whilst Britain Long Ago also has ink inscription to Bill from his mother. Other three copies have prize sticker's on either the pastedown or rector of front endpaper for Bruce Arundale, J.W Walker, and Joy Forde from different schools. Stories from Dickens has Highfield College gilt stamp to exterior of front board. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. All generally smart, with early signs of wear at the joints. Stories from Scottish history slightly more rubbed than others. All only lightly bumped with minimal wear to the extremities. Blind stamp reading 'Westfield House, Hadstock, Somerset' to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. The tips of the free endpapers are tanned. Light foxing in the margins. Tiny closed tear on the plate facing page 287. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding secure. London, Richard Bentley & Son, 1885. 1st ed. thus. Hardcover. pp. xi, 350. Royal 8vo. This is a selection of 33 stories, by various authors, from 'Bentley's Miscellany' magazine. Each story is mostly humourous in nature and illustrated by a Cruikshank illustration 'printed from the original etchings on steel'. There is some offsetting of the engravings to the text, but generally the engravings themselves are in vg condition (save for the spotting around the engravings, as noted). The binding has been recently, and professionally, restored. Notwithstanding, the boards still show wear to edges and some light soiling. Very small name stamp on front pastedown. Foredges a bit foxed; else in good plus condition. Digital photos available upon request. 'With thirty-three illustrations printed from the original etchings on steel'. All plates present as called for. Ill.: 33 Cruikshank engravings.
