A sweeping work illustrating the best of British poets' work dedicated to the beauty of flowers, compiled by Eden Warwick. The first edition beautifully rebound in full calf with gilt detail by Riviere & Son. With decorative margins to the leaves. Including poets ranging from fourteenth century to the late eighteenth century, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, John Skelton, Sir Philip Sidney, William Shakespeare, John Milton, &c. In full calf binding by Riviere & Son, with five raised bands, gilt tooling to spine and extremities, marbled endpapers. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, lightly rubbed to joints and extremities of the boards. Gift inscription to front blank leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Previous ownership inscription obscured to title page, barely visible, and minor pencil marginal annotations to the occasional leaf. Light foxing to endpapers, affecting only the occasional page with few odd spots scattered throughout, otherwise the pages are clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .

A scarce first edition, in which artist Henry Noel Humphreys uses thirty repeating full-page wood-engraved borders to introduce each flower discussed, which were described as 'among the most original and powerful black and white decorations to appear in any Victorian book' by McLean.Compiled by Eden Warwick, who uses examples of the works of the best poets - from the fourteenth to eighteenth century, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, John Skelton, Sir Philip Sidney, William Shakespeare, John Milton, &c - to explore the relationship between poetry and nature.With the bookplate Henry Aubrey to the front pastedown, and the bookplate of David Graham to the front free endpaper. To a front blank is an 1851 inscription from George Herbert, presenting the work to H.G.W. Aubrey. Rebacked, in a full morocco binding. With original boards restored, and back strip laid down. Retaining the original endpapers, with hinges reinforced. Rubbing to raised bands of back strip, and board heads and tails. Front free endpaper loosely held. Bookplate to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Contemporary inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned to perimeters, with the odd spot. Very Good .
