And directions for birds, beasts, landskps, ships, and the like. Moreover, grounds to lay silver or gold upon,... and how to varnish it when you have done. How also to diaper and shadow things, and to heighten them to stand off; to deepen them, and make them glister. In this book you have the necessary instruments for drawing, and the use of them, and how to make artificial pastiles to draw withal. and also directions how to draw with Indian-ink: wherein you have also Mr. Hollar's receipt for etching, with instructions how to use it. Very useful for all handicrafts, and ingenious gentlemen and youths. By Hammer and hand all arts do stand.

London: Printed for John Garrett, [1679.] Small folio (312 x 198 mm), [1], 21, [1] leaves, half-title with engraved portrait of Dürer on verso, 19 full-page engravings on rectos (6 partly coloured in amateur pink pencil) with text on numbered versos, publisher's advertisement on the verso of final leaf, text browned and lightly soiled, stitched as issued with half-title and publisher's advertisement as upper and lower covers, corners a little dog-eared, covers with light chipping to margins and just touching the border of the frontispiece. A rare early edition of a drawing manual which was first published by Thomas Jenner (1621-1672) in 1652 under the title 'A Book of Drawing', with a further edition appearing in 1666. On his death he was succeeded by the printseller John Garrett (1669-1718), who publisher further editions from whose shop "you may have choice of all sorts of large or small maps; coloured, or uncoloured, variety of Dutch and French prints, and prints done in Metzo-Tincto, very good Indian-ink to draw withal, and all sorts of the best copy-books, and Cocker's tutor to writing and arithmetick... and several sorts of coloured sashes to set before windows." All editions are rare and seldom appear in commerece, ESTC locating just a single complete copy of this edition at Harvard.

Small engr. portrait, facing left, 'te halver lijve', within an engraved picture frame, wearing his decorations [to the left his 'Grootkruis Militaire Willemsorde 1815? to the right the 'Doggersbank' penning 1781], unsigned. Below it within a woodcut border the original autograph signature in ink accompanied by van Kinsbergen's lacquer seal, showing an heraldic shield, crowned, on both sides ..... by ???, below the shield a band from which a medallion hangs...

Date of signature difficult to guess, but in view of the slight ... in the ink possibly 1800- 1815. Both the portrait and the rectangular paper label (of which the lower left decorated woodc. border partially cut off), mounted on a sheet of good quality Pro Patria watermarked paper, meas. appr. 18.5 x 23 cm. The small portrait meas. appr. 7 x 8.5 cm, unsigned, but probably Muller 2910 k. not in van Someren. The woodcut decorated label w. the original signature meas. appr. 10 x 4.5 cm. Luitenant Admiraal van Kinsbergen [1735 - 1819] Van Kinsbergen was an extremely succesfull naval officer serving both in the Russian [1771 - 1775] as well as the Dutch naval forces [1775 - 1795]. He became famous for his part in the battle at the Doggersbank in 1781, after a stellar career, only hindered by the patriots / orangists debate and 'omwenteling', he was honoured in 1806 as the last great naval hero, and offered titles of 'maarschalk, admiraal'and 'Graaf van de Doggersbank'. Also 'Jonkheer'. He was involved in the modernization of the navy, authoring many publications on naval and sea warfare subjects. Apart from this he was an extremely wealthy man who chose to share his wealth in order to strenghthen the image of the Navy, the education of young people and the advancement of art and culture in general.
