Robert Baldick [ed.]
Pages from the Goncourt Journal
London, Oxford University Press, 1962. Cloth. A bright copy of this historical work, containing extracts from the Goncourt brothers' journal, forming a fascinating look at the Parisian art scene. The first edition thus containing these pages from the Goncourt Journal. In the publisher's unclipped dust wrapper. With a frontispiece and eight monochrome plates. Collated, complete. The Goncourt Journal was a diary written by the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, offering an entirely candid insight to the artistic Parisian world in which they lived. These extracts of the journal were compiled, edited and translated by Robert Baldick, a British scholar of French literature and Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford.  In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with slight fading to the cloth edges and light bumping to the extremities. Dust wrapper is smart, with wear and light chipping to the edges of the wrap. A few small marks to the wrap. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good Indeed/Very Good.

GONCOURT, EDMOND AND JULES DE
Pages from the Goncourt Journal
London, Folio Society. 1980, First Thus. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. An As New unmarked copy in pictorial boards with an As New slip case. 432 pages. 20 illustrations of contemporary photographs by Nadar and others. Born nearly ten years apart into a French aristocratic family, the two brothers formed an extraordinarily productive and enduring literary partnership, collaborating on novels, criticism, and plays that pioneered the new aesthetic of naturalism. But the brothers' talents found their most memorable outlet in their journal, which is at once a chronicle of an era, an intimate glimpse into their lives, and the purest expression of a nascent modern sensibility preoccupied with sex and art, celebrity and self-exposure. The Goncourts visit slums, brothels, balls, department stores, and imperial receptions; they argue over art and politics and trade merciless gossip with and about Hugo, Baudelaire, Degas, Flaubert, Zola, Rodin, and many others. And in 1871, Edmond maintains a vigil as his brother dies a slow and agonizing death from syphilis, recording every detail in the journal that he would continue to maintain alone for another two decades. As New/As New.
