In the Year of Our Lord 1743
London, R. Walker, 1744. First edition. Leather. The first and only edition of this scarce and thrilling account of the famous Annesley v Anglesey trial, illustrated with a portrait frontispiece. The first and only edition of this scarce work.ESTC citation number N13750.Title page is provided in facsimile, otherwise the work is complete.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece.Register runs as A-3K4.A faithful and fantastical account of the famous Annesley v Anglesea trial.James Annesley was the son of the 4th Baron Altham, but after his father's death when he was about 12 years old, young Annesley was kidnapped and sold into indentured servitude on the orders of his uncle, Richard Annesley. Richard then claimed the title and lands of the earldom of Anglesey. James works as an indentured servant for 12 years before finally escaping his plantation in Delaware and finally returning to England and entering into a trial against his uncle to claim his birthright. This was a highly publicised trial whilst it was happening, with many accounts of the trial being published in across Britain. It's generally believed that Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired by this story to write his novel 'Kidnapped&apos.Including 'The trial of James Annesley and Joseph Redding, at the Sessions-house in the Old-Bailey, on Thursday, July 15, 1742, for the murder of Thomas Egglestone' to pages 399 - 448. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are a little age toned with the occasional spot. Frontispiece, facsimile title, and leaves A2 and A3 are working loose. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
