A collection of six plays performed at London's Theatre Royal and Prince's Theatre, including two by James Kenney which are signed to the title page. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Endpapers and blanks renewed. A sammelband of six nineteenth century plays, each performed at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, apart from the final play which was performed at The Prince's Theatre.Comprised of the following: 'Everyman in his Humour', written by Ben Jonson, an English playwright and poet known for his contributions to the comedy genre. Dated 1806 using Jisc from copies of the work held at the British Library. Illustrated with a frontispiece. 'The Magico Prodigioso of Calderon', or 'The Magic Prodigy' (1834), a lyrical drama written by Spanish dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age, Pedro Calderon de la Barca. With one page of errata. 'The King's Seal: A Comedy' (1835), the first edition, signed by the author to the title page with the inscription "With Mr. Kenney's best respects". James Kenney was an English dramatist, producing more than forty plays and founding the Boodles' gentlemans club in London. '"Not a Word!" A Burletta' (1835), the first edition, signed "With the author's best regards" to the title page, although partially obscured due to the pages being closely trimmed. 'The Words of the Opera of Acis and Galatea', written by John Gay, and adapted for stage representation from the serenata of Handel. Dated c1842 using Jisc from copies held at the University of Oxford libraries. With one page of publisher's advertisements.'Eurythanthe; A Grand Romantic Opera in 3 Acts', The Managers Edition, written by German journalist and poet, Helmina Von Chezy with the music by Carl Maria von Weber. In German and English. Dated using Jisc from copies held at the British Library. Each play is bound without half titles. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Externally, lovely, with the odd mark and light shelf wear. Endpapers and blanks renewed. No half titles. Internally, generally firmly bound, with just the first few pages and the frontispiece of 'Wit and Humour' a little strained. Pages are bright with the occasional light spot or handling mark. Planche, and others by the Brothers Brough and Charles Selby. The first five volumes present are authored by British dramatist James Robinson Planché, who over half a century wrote, adapted, on collaborated on 176 plays in a wide range of genres.The first work is the very scarce first edition of J. R. Planche's two act 'fairy extravaganza' called 'Fortunio, and His Seven Gifted Servants&apos.The second work is a very scarce grand comic called 'The Island of Jewels', another of Planche's fairy extravaganzas. This edition was published circa 1849.The third work is an 1850 edition of Planche's very scarce grand comic fairy extravaganza 'King Charming or the Blue Bird of Paradise&apos.The fourth work is Planche's 'panoramic extravaganza' titled 'Mr. Buckstone's Ascent of Mount Parnassus&apos. Illustrated with one plate, and published circa 1853.The fifth is 'The Yellow dwarf and the King of the Gold Mines', published in 1854.Authored by playwrights William and Robert Brough is the very scarce 1848 drama 'The Enchanted Isle or, "Raising the Wind" on the Most Approved Principles&apos. Published in 1848, and illustrated with one plate.The penultimate work is Robert B. Brough's 'fish tale' 'Masaniello; or, the Fish'oman of Naples', published in 1857.The final work comedian Charles Selby's play 'Taming a Tartar; or, Magic & Mazourkaphobia&apos. Published in 1846, and illustrated with one plate.Pasted to the rear pastedown and endpaper is a 1909 newspaper obituary of actor Lionel Brough.An index to the works is handwritten to the front pastedown, and indicates that two plays have been removed. In a cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with fading to back strip. Inscription to front pastedown, and newspaper clippings pasted to rear free endpaper and pastedown. Front free endpaper removed. Internally, text block separated prior to the start of 'Masaniello', indicating the location where two plays have been removed.
