From 1874 to 1880 he was the Conservative Member of Parliament for North Lincolnshire. He was devoted to sports including horse racing, boxing and pedestrianism, and was a popular figure at horse race meetings. This work, which contains the first record of the phrase "like a duck to water", was edited by Richard Thorold. Ten pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume II. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with fading to the spines and a little bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
