William Butler
Mexico in Transition from the Power of Political Romanism to CIVIL and Religious Liberty
New York, Hunt & Eaton, 1893. Third Edition. Hardcover. 325p. A brown cloth hardcover book stamped with silver-colored decorations on the cover. Hinges quite shaken; otherwise a clean and attractive vintage copy. Illustrated with black-and-white plates. Author William Butler and his wife Clementina were Methodist missionaries who founded Methodist communities in India and Mexico. In the book, Butler praises Mexico's first indigenous president, Benito Juarez, and his anti-clericalism stance against the interference of Catholic France in Mexico's government. France installed Emperor Maximilian I in opposition to Juarez in 1864, and Maximilian received the blessing of Pope Pius IX. Juarez and the Republicans regained power and had Maximilian executed. Good .
