Director-General, Indian Medical Service (Ed.)
The Indian Journal of Medical Research. Vol. I (1913-1914) - Vol. XII (1924-1925) [and] Vol. X (Supplementary No.)
Indian Research Fund Association 1913-1925 , numerous b/w + col plates. . HB. 13 vols, 4to, mixed bindings, cont. half leather, rubbed/scuffed, orig. wrappers retained. One volume bound in buckram. Withdrawn from an institutional library. Good.. A scarce and early run of The Indian Journal of Medical Research, comprising the first 12 volumes, along with the Supplementary Number to Vol. X, a substantial 366-page monograph on the trematode blood fluke Cercariae indica by R.B. Seymour Sewell. The journal commenced publication in 1913 under the editorship of Sir Pardey Lukis (1857-1917), with the mission to address the lack of an Indian periodical dedicated to the research and discussion of sanitation and disease prevention in a country facing serious public health challenges. The editorial introduction of Volume I, noted “At present there is in India no periodical devoted entirely to the publication of research work connected with sanitation and the prevention of disease.” This statement underscores the significance of the journal's role in shaping medical research and public health policies in British India. The Indian Journal of Medical Research focused heavily on tropical medicine and pathology, fields critical to the health landscape of India at the time. Articles covered pressing issues such as malaria transmission by mosquitoes, filariasis, kala-azar, leprosy, plague, syphilis, snake bites, and nutritional disorders. Contributions came from prominent British and Indian medical professionals, making this journal an essential resource for medical researchers and historians of colonial and tropical medicine. A scarce early set of this foundational Asian medical journal, which continues publication to the present day, making it one of the oldest medical periodicals in Asia..

24 ll.Photograph album, by an unknown photographer, of the British Gold Coast Colony (modern Ghana) with a particular emphasis on the Colonial Medical Service, suggesting that the photographer was attached to the service. Although the photographs have captions, they name no time or any specific individual. The largest part of the album contains photographs of Sekondi and shows the town's hospital, the medical officer of health's office and bungalow, a medical officer's bungalow and several town and street views. A set of 8 photographs shows preparations for waterworks near Sekondi, including a "site of the proposed dam", which would date the photographs somewhere in the early 1910s, a group portrait of the medical officer, engineers and a foreman and local residents. There are also views of Chama, Axim, Half Assini, the railway station at Tarkwa, Somanya, Kade and Anum and the old Dutch fortresses at Accra, Cape Coast and Sekondi. Daily life is visible in multiple photographs and includes butchers and refuse incinerators in Sekondi, a mail carrier on the road to Chawa, fish ovens and fishermen in Chama, a group of children washing in Sekondi, a market at Dodowa and a funeral procession in Somanya.Binding somewhat worn at the edges. In good condition. A unique collection of photographs of Ghana with a particular emphasis on the medical services.l Cf. Greenwood, ed., Beyond the state (2015).

[44] ll.Third edition of a magnificent display of Javanese fruits and flowers, their bright colours ideally suited to the new technique of chromolithography. Hoola van Nooten (1840-1885), a twenty-two-year-old widow in "exile" on the island of Java, "was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit, have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics. The reader's eye is immediately captured by the dark leaves, shown furled or crumpled or partly nibbled away by insects, the delicately rendered details of the follicles and seeds, and the heavy clusters of flowers that cascade down the page. The excellent reproduction of the artist's drawings in the form of chromolithographs lends an added tactility to these striking images" (Tomasi). With a deeply personal two-page preface (on one leaf) by the artist ("This work is particularly addressed to women. Its object, its tendency, its entire scope, all marks it with the special seal of our sex").Binding restored, new endpapers, some browning; a good copy.l GFB, p. 60; Plesch, p. 349; Stafleu & Cowan 3025; Stiftung für Botanik 363; Tomasi, An Oak Spring flora 87.

[29] ll.Arabic manuscript containing the Arabic translation of Ibn Sina’s Qanunsah ("Small canon"), originally written in Persian: a brief medical compendium compiled by the Khwarazmian polymath Mahmud ibn Muhammad ibn Umar al-Gamini based on Ibn Sina’s famous Qanun. This abridged manual of medicine is arranged in ten parts ("maqalat", or "discourses"), each containing several chapters. The first maqalat serves as a general introduction, dealing with the basic concepts of 14th century medical science and illustrating the various physical qualities (al-arkan) and body constitutions (al-amzigat), then focusing on the four Galenic humours (al-ahlat) - blood, phlegm, yellow and black bile - before discussing the parts of the body, the senses or faculties (al-quwá), and the preservation of one’s natural temper (al-umur at-tabi iya). Further "discourses" treat anatomy, the various "conditions of the human body" ("ahwal badan al-insan"), the pulse, the "tafsira", or urine bottle given to the physician by the patient for inspection, the various aspects of the "wise management of diseases", "head diseases" and "diseases affecting the other body parts", chronic diseases of the various organs, evident defects (or "infirmities") in the external appearance of the body, fevers, and ultimately the importance of food and drink as remedies. The Qanunceh was widely used at Eastern Persian schools as an introductory medical instruction manual for at least three centuries.Slight soiling of the extremities of the leaves, otherwise in good condition.
