Aidova, Marina (Editor)
From Newbury With Love: Letters of Friendship Across the Iron Curtain
Hoboken, NJ : Melville House, 2007. Paperback. 258 pp. English text. Condition : very good. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good. - In 1971 a retired English bookseller joined an Amnesty International campaign to write letters to children of political prisoners. He chose seven-year-old Marina Aidova because her birthday was one day before his, and he had always loved Russia and its literature. His postcard was signed, With love from Newbury, Berks, England. Marina, whose father was in one of the harshest Soviet prison camps, wrote back: I am a first class schoolgirl. I learn ballet and study English. And what are you? So began a correspondence that changed their lives. For the next fifteen years they exchanged letters, telegrams, magazines, and books . . . while a profound affection grew. Marina and her mother drew great strength from the exchange-it was a lifeline to another, more hopeful world. Through Harold's encouragement, Marina was inspired to study English at university, and eventually went on to work as an English translator. ISBN 9781933633220.

An Englishwoman's Love-Letters
London, John Murray. 1901. hardcover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Clean Copy, A contemperaneous note inserted into the book suggests 'there is a genuine ring about an englishwoman's love-letters if you imagine the kind of girl who wrote them, the gradual transition from the first rapturous bursts to the more placid tones of the middle ones and finally the dying sobs of a broken heart. The whole thing is a frightful tragedy. The moral seems to be have plenty to do and don't be too sentimental.' This suggests the was definitely written by a genuine English Victorian gentleman. The Love Letters of a Subaltern
Northampton, Birdsall and Son, 1916. Hardback. A very scarce collection of fictious - possibly semi-autobiographical - letters between a soldier and his fiancée, from 1915 to 1916. A very scarce work in the publisher's original paper boards. A collection of letters between a British soldier and his fiancée between December 1915 to July 1916. Although the foreword states that these letters are "founded on actual facts" and that only names and places are of a "fictitious character", it is likely that this work is mainly fictitious with occasional autobiographical elements. This work, written by a "Field Officer", aims to show how the ordeal of battle changes the minds and morals of soldiers. Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. In the publisher's original paper boards. Externally, in unusually lovely condition for its age. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages, and to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Near Fine . Ill.: Not Stated. Near Fine .
