Auction Sale Catalogue - 1935 - Sawley Abbey Estate Near Clitheroe on the Borders of Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire Contains 2 Location Maps and 11 of 12 Photographic Reproductions Now: Bb7 4lf Bb7 4nh Bb7 4lj
Marshall & Hicks Beach, 1935. Soft Cover. Auction Sale Catalogue. Full Title: On the Lancashire and West Riding of Yorkshire Border. Sawley near Clitheroe. The Freehold, Agricultural and Sporting Property distinguished as Sawley Abbey Estate situated in the charming Ribbedale Valley and extending tp about 2,220 Acres comprising The delightful residence of Sawley Lodge with 15 very fine grass farms, small holdings and Cottages and the well known Spread Eagle Inn and valuable fishings on theRoverRibble. Electric Supply for the Village of Sawley..... to be sold at Auction as a whole or alternatively in 49 lots at The Swan and Royal Hotel, Clitheroe on Tuesday, 14th May, 1935 24 pages with descriptions of the lots and 12 of 13 photos of Clover Cottage, Sawley Lodge Greenhead South Farm etc. With two large folding coloured plans. Lots include a small stone-built structure, measuring approximately 4.5m by 7m, currently owned by the inhabitants of one of the nearby houses. In the 1930s, it housed a turbine which supplied electricity for the whole village, and was listed as 'The Village Electric Supply & Sawmill' in the sales particulars of the Sawley Abbey Estate in 1935. Although the small structure is not the original building which housed the monastic mill machinery, it may be that there is a continuity of location for monastic and post-monastic milling operations in this area. In the same sales particulars, Lot 5 is described as 'Formerly The Old Abbey Mill' and is labelled on the accompanying plan as the long building to the north-east of the small structure and at right angles to the mill-race. During the excavations in the 1970s and 80s this building was partially derelict; it was recorded at this time and it was noted that there was late medieval masonry incorporated into the west end (Coppack et al 2002, 111). It is almost certain that this was originally the medieval mill which was then retained as the village mill following the Dissolution, before becoming a Wesleyan chapel in the nineteenth century. (from recent archaeological survey). The lots in Sawley include: Bridge End, the Spread Eagle Hotel, Southport House, Old Abbey Mill, Cowper Place, Clover Cottage, Sawley Lodge, Lane Side, Dockber, Lane Side Cottage, Browtop, Greenhead South Farm, Greenhead North Farm, Sawley Grange Old Farm, Cow Gill, and in Gisburn Dudlands, Gisburn Cotes, and again in Sawley Long Holme Row, Huckle Ing Farm, Lawson House, Bow Laithe and Rodhill Gate, Bolton By Bowland, The Hague, Abbey Cottage, Old Abbey Of Sawley, New Sawley Grange, four lots of Salmon and Trout fishing on the River Ribble and etc. The catalogue is in VG condition though a bit dusty and worn. The is some rusting of the staples and the centerfold is loose. The maps are in VG but used condition. Now at: BB7 4LF BB7 4NH BB7 4LJ etc. See scans and email for more. . Very Good
