The album highlights iconic Zen Buddhist settings and an intimate view of a traditional Buddhist wedding. Here are original views of the Pagoda at Nara, The Golden Pavillion, Kijomuzu Temple-Kyoto, Saihoji Moss Gardens, Ryoanji Temple abstract garden++ & a series of photos picturing traditional Japanese dining & ceremony, and western style gatherings. A birthday party for Esther. An original 10.75"x9.75" landscape by Ruyku Saito, a modern Sumi Master, and a 4.5"x6" photo portrait signed by him. The key photos are each clearly annotated. The album, 11"x13" spiral bound with woven cloth covered beveled boards. 16 leaves, about half have separated. 88 photograph- about half 4.5"x6", 2 large full-page images, and the balance 3x3 & 3x5. Overall, in nice condition and presents very well. . Very Good.

Americans in Japan - Yokohama-e, 1861

AMERICANS IN JAPAN T?to meish? kenbutsu ijin – Ry?gokubashi [Foreign sightseers in famous spots of Edo - Ry?goku bridge], woodcut printed in colours made by Utagawa Sadahide, published by Yamaguchiya T?bei in 1861. Size: 36.5 x 25.8 cm. From the 1630s to the mid-nineteenth century, Japan was virtually closed to foreigners. From 1641 onwards, the Dutch were the only Westerners allowed to reside and trade there. They had to adhere to strict regulations and were only allowed to live on Dejima, an artificial island in the port of Nagasaki. In 1858, the Dutch monopoly ended, marking the end of the Dejima era. The United States, Great Britain, France and Russia also gained trading rights with Japan. The foreigners settled in Yokohama, which quickly developed into Japan's most important port. They had much more freedom there than in Nagasaki, and women were also allowed to stay there. An international community developed in which the Dutch were no longer the most important. The woodcut shown here is a so-called Yokohama-e (???, "Yokohama pictures"), printed from a woodblock depicting foreigners in the port city of Yokohama. Foreigners were a curiosity for the Japanese, and these prints met a huge demand. Prints made in Yokohama are more refined than earlier prints from Nagasaki. The artistic level is higher, the printing quality is better, and more colours were used. The scene shows an American man and woman sightseeing at the Ry?goku bridge in Edo (Tokyo). For the Japanese who also visit the bridge, it is the Americans who are the main attraction. Utagawa Sadahide (?? ??, 1807- c. 1878–1879) (signing this print as Gountei Sadahide), was member of the Utagawa school. His prints covered a wide variety of genres; amongst his best known are his pictures of foreigners in Yokohama in the 1860s, a period when he was a best-selling artist. Price: Euro 850,-
