London, Printed by James Young, for Thomas Underhill, and are to be sold at Signe of the Bible in Wood-street, 1646. Small 4to, 210 x 152, pp. [xvi], 456 [457 - 484 index], title-page in red and black, preceded by imprimatur leaf, 18th century panelled calf. A very good copy, inscribed on the front end-paper, "Johannes Poley ex dono Thomae Lord." John Poley (1603 - 1664) spent twenty years as an academic at Pembroke College, Oxford, but aspired to a position at Court. Edward Leigh (1603 - 1671) was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, and later at the Middle Temple. He married Elizabeth Talbot (d. 1707), and their son was the poet Richard Leigh. "Leigh's upbringing was notable for its fervent puritanism, which owed much to his stepmother, Ruth Scudamore, and to his university tutor, William Pemble. By the late 1630s Leigh and his wife were members of the godly circle based at Banbury in Oxfordshire.... Undoubtedly his most notable work was his Critica sacra, a philological study of the Hebrew and Greek words of the Old and New testaments, initially published in two separate editions in 1639 and 1642. This lexicon became a standard work of reference, winning the plaudits of scholars like William Gouge and Thomas Fuller, earning him the respect of James Ussher, and being translated into several foreign languages.... While not an original thinker, he impressed contemporary writers not only for the 'industry' of his literary output, but also for its sheer range, prompting one 'judicious divine' to remark, 'Sir you labour to make us idle'" (ODNB).
