Second edition, 12mo, [4], 198pp., engraved frontispiece and 7 engraved plates, 3 full-page wood-engraved, 1 illustration within the text, some offsetting from plates, a couple of gatherings standing proud, cont. calf, joints cracked, untitled spine with raised bands outlined in gilt, corners bumped, head and foot of spine chipped. "Philander, a rich gentleman, sick of dissipation and amusement, retires to the country to devote himself to benevolence, taking as his motto "Virtue alone is happiness below." Hen entertains each Monday six young gentlemen—Master Steady, Master Featherbrain, Master Speakwell, etc.—and each Thursday six young ladies—Miss Allgood, Miss Prattle, Miss Haughty, etc. After one of them has told a story or recited a poem, the remainder of the visit is devoted to the study of the sciences in which each pupil speaks his piece in nauseating sententiousness interlarded with piety."—NBL. Two volumes bound into one, being the volumes for the year 1862 and 1863. Illustrated with many in-text images and a colour frontispiece to the volume for 1863. A collection of stories, games, poetry, and puzzles for children, including: Alice and Her Pupil, Worship of the crows, Birthday verses, Harry and the Bear, John's New Year's Gift, Jesus and the Little Children, and more. Produced by The Religious Tract Society, a British evangelical Christian organization founded in 1799, known for publishing a variety of popular religious and quasi-religious texts in the nineteenth century. Publisher's advertisements to the rear. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light loss to the head and tail of the spines as well as the board edges. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound with the odd page loosening, including the colour plate. Pages are bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Minor age toning to the extremities.
