Harper and Brothers, 1900. 1900. Hardcover with dust jacket. Netherlands Edition. A complete Limited & Numbered set of 17 hardbacks w/ dustjackets. Thick tall octavos, appx 6 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches, blue titles and decorations on orange cloth, all in original, heavy fabric-finish dustjackets, as a set VG+ in VG+ dj's. Each volume #'d 376/500. SIGNED by various illustrators at the first 14 frontispieces (Fredericks, Pyle (only once), DuMond, Mora, etc) + SIGNED at the biographical preface in volume 1 by William Elliot Griffis. Vols. 15, 16, 17 frontispieces are not signed and are reproductions of portraits of Motley. Top edges gilt. Railroad-themed bookplate each front pastedown (railroad executive, born 19th century in Vermont). Dustjackets are dark blue on mid-tone blue with yellowing to spines. Vol. 1 (book itself) has dampstain externally only along fore-edge of front board, not affecting type or decoration but with a little wrinkling to the dj as well + Vol. 1 also has a very small tear to lower edge of FFEP.
